LISBON, April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ On this day, the 19th of April commemorates the beginning of a massacre that lasted three days and took away around three thousand Jewish lives in Lisbon. The pyres burned higher than the rooftops, in a city filled with quartered bodies and heads on spear points paraded through its streets.
According to Michael Rothwell, director of the Oporto Holocaust museum, “there has always been a mix of stereotypes, fanatical joy and terrorism of the quartering in the massacres that for two millennia targeted the Jews in such different locations as Alexandria, Granada, Seville, Madrid, Toledo Barcelona Basel Überlingen Strasburg Cologne Worms Erfurt Metz York Norwich Trent Troyes Bern Paris Odessa Moscow Hebron and recently the border areas of southern Israel.”
The documentary film was cut as short as possible about twenty minutes long so that it could be watched by everyone who is not inclined to watch long movies. Its format allows for viewings organized by the organization in cinemas all over the world with invited speakers and comments from viewers.
On Wednesday 17th at the Tel Aviv Diaspora Museum there was a pre-screening of this movie followed by a debate moderated by Alex Traiman Editor in Chief at Jewish News Syndicate. Among speakers were Michal Cotler Wunsh Israeli Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism; Raheli Baratz-Rix Head of Department for Combating Antisemitism and Enhancing Resilience World Zionist Organization; Ashley Peretz President of Association Reconectar which promotes reconnection between descendants Sephardic Jews with Jewish world.
The documentary film was made by Portuguese director Luís Ismael with participation of hundreds dressed up extras armed extras. Research was done by Community’s historical research centre reviewed holder Alberto Benveniste Chair Sephardic Studies University Lisbon.
