The Last Mercenary

David Charon is still betting on an action movie star who never goes out of style: Jean-Claude Van Damme. With The Last Mercenary, he stages a story full of suspense that stars a former secret service agent. Having learned that his son has been arrested for arms and drug trafficking, “La Bruma” does everything to save him and ensure his justice. But it’s too late when he discovers that the affair is actually an orchestrated trap intended to lure him into a trap and get to him. Between the mafia, corruption, and adrenaline, the film revives such a giant.

Written by David Charhon, in collaboration with Ismael Sy Savane, the film also stars Eric Judor, Miou-Miou, Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, and Michel Crémadès. Shot and set in France, the feature sets itself the arduous task of re-proposing an absolute icon like Jean-Claude Van Damme, in a role that fits him perfectly.

Aftermath

In 2017 Elliott Lester gets behind the camera to direct a crime film with a clear action imprint. Javier Gullón ‘s screenplay centers on a story that really happened in 2002. An architect, Roman Melnyk, learns that the plane in which his family was present crashed, not detecting any survivors. The man then decides to take revenge against the air traffic controller Jacob Bonanos, considered the only one responsible for the affair. The film closely follows the pain and personal drama of a wounded man, but also his relentless thirst for justice.

The undisputed protagonist of the film is an evergreen Arnold Schwarzenegger, in a role that fits him perfectly. Accompanying him are Scoot McNairy, Maggie Grace, Kevin Zegers, Hannah Ware, Glenn Morshower, Mariana Klaveno, Larry Sullivan, and Lewis Pullman. The producers also include the director of The Black Swan, Requiem for a dream, and Madre! Darren Aronofsky.

Xtreme

Daniel Benmayor directs a screenplay by Teo García, which Netflix promptly acquires. The film, already a critical and public success, comes from Spain and features some well-known faces of the country. The plot revolves around an intricate family war, where two brothers are against each other. To help the protagonist in his revenge there is also a rather problematic teenager, who stops at nothing to achieve his goal. An action thriller that speaks the language of revenge, courage, and fortitude that turns into a spirit of survival. In the background, a Barcelona is stained with the blood of bloody murders.

The Spanish cast sees Óscar Jaenada in the title role, already known for his participation in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Alongside him, we find Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Óscar Casas, Andrea Duro, Luis Zahera, Juan Diego, Nao Albert, Iván Valentín, Jose Álvarez-Boze, Cesar Bandera, Isa Montalbán and Teo García, who wrote the film.

Scarface

Brian De Palma’s iconic film, based on a screenplay by Oliver Stone, is a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, with differences in the time and place of the setting. Tony Montana, a Cuban, lives in Miami in the 1980s. Together with two other cronies, Montana decides that she has had enough of life as a waiter, to start criminal activity instead. He then soon becomes the leader of a small gang, of which he will be the only one to emerge and be noticed by the big bosses. The film, which quickly became a cult of the genre, has been subjected to censorship in several countries and has also become the progenitor of a real franchise.

To impersonate Montana we find a magnificent Al Pacino, at the height of his career. Together with him are also Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Loggia, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Paul Shenar, and Richard Belzer. The film met with great success with audiences and critics and was nominated for three Golden Globes, among which the soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder stands out.
