I don’t think any show has ever affected me as much as Blood Brothers, so for last night to be press night at Curve was such a full circle moment.
It was the first show I’d ever seen on the West End, one of the first professional shows I’d seen and I remember being completely blown away. What’s amazing about Blood Brothers is you’ll laugh as much as you cry!
So to see it again last night, my love for Blood Brothers is still kept very much alive.
This is a show that will move you, it will make you laugh and it will break your heart. The portrayl of mental health, the innocence, the portrayal of class and social status, it intertwines them all yet starts with a comedic act one and ends with a heartbreaking act two so well.
As the curtain rises there’s no mistaking the stark contrast between the two houses. A promise of opposing lives they are destined to lead. This representation continues with a looming narrator (Scott Anson) who reminded us all someone’s looking down on others and breathing down their necks.
Sean Jones and Joe Sleight were outstanding together as Mickey and Eddie. The playful mannerisms into complex adults was incredible. My only minor niggle would be there’s no way you could mistake them as identical twins, bringing question to Mrs. Lyons line where she mistakes Eddie for Mickey in childhood locket. But hey ho theatre!
Linda (Gemma Brodrick) and Mrs. Johnstone (Niki Colwell Evans) both standout performances also for me last night. Evans had such a wonderful singing voice which performed Tell Me Its Not True so well I can honestly say I was sobbing by this point! She just oozed Mrs. Johnstone from her characterization! Meanwhile Brodrick delivered a beautiful performance too transitioning from headstrong seven year old causing chaos with Mickey and Eddie naturally into powerful crumbling wife performance.
Score wise, the songs also written by Willy Russell contain powerful lyrics that drive the story along and emphasise emotion in abundance. My favourites Marilyn Monroe and Tell Me Its Not True were just as wonderful this week as the first time I heard them. I also enjoyed hearing Kids Game tho and getting those GCSE drama memories back.
