Someone Like You
With the recent release of her latest film, Someone Like You, it is safe to say that fans of Karen Kingsbury’s movies and books are in for a special experience. This is true even though her works have remained active on film for numerous times. It is, however, important to note that for the first time such a movie has been produced independently by her new production company, Karen Kingsbury Productions.
Kingsbury advised, “There was a deep appreciation for the other movies but personally, it was not the movie that God put in my heart”.
What was needed in such a case was to be a complete varier and produce the project. From breathtaking cinematography, to wardrobe and locations; these were all the choices of Kingsbury.
“Everything went right and (the movie) was complete in 25 days. We prayed for wisdom and favor, and we got it.” She reported.
Normally, my habit is to tell you about newcomers and their music, but the circumstances were such that I was totally fascinated. It is proto-may I say that it is very inspiring that Someone Like You was actually filmed in the teller’s home state of Tennessee, particularly in various scenes in and around Franklin, Nashville and even Alabama.
Someone Like You is an incredibly touching yet redemptive love story which focuses on an architect Dawson Gage who fell in love during high school with London Quinn the love of his life despite London telling him not to back then. Fast forward ten years into the future and now the two are still no more than best friends when tragedy strikes. Mourning the loss of London, Dawson now has no choice but one last act of love for her. He embarks on the impossible journey of looking for London’s secret twin that no one was aware existed, Andi Allen, (also by Sarah Fisher) whom they had frozen at the embryo stage. And what happens when Andi is told this? It’s fun and games until she discovers Andi was a trained instead of an imbecile child how Dare you adopt me. Yet, Dawson had no intentions of getting himself hooked romantically. At the Franklin Theatre, where the premiere was held, a remarkable number of stars were in attendance that night and all were eager to voice their support for Kingsbury.
Danica McKellar (Hallmark, The Wonder Years) said, “It’s such a beautiful movie as well. A person loses a child, true, but by and large there is some strength in there as well, whether it be by faith, or by God, or the entire support of the family.”
Their friend was also a creative and so it was no surprise that Amy Grant and Vince Gill were around. Grant expressed, “Well, Vince and I want to promote, especially this movie and add arts in general. Well, Karen Kingsbury has gone all the way. It is something necessary for all of us to help the arts. This is that spirit of Franklin Theatre, it’s as if one has got the best of being in a small town. And Franklin is like that.”
When Vince Gill discovered that Micheal W. Smith was out there supporting his son Tyler Smith, the man who did the music for the movie, he said, “I really want to hear the music. Nashville has popped up as a great city in which to make movies. It’s fabulous for the town.”
Michael W. Smith said regarding his son Tyler, “This guy who is able to play piano, run circles around me, has embraced the noble craft of making Film scores. He did well, quite well. There is certainly a bug for movie making in Nashville.”
Fox News host Shannon Breams shared, “I am just a big fan of all of her books. They are very motivating as they are telling something.”
This flick has the most redeeming and magnificent theme. Tissues are required; you will need them”’
Even Dan & Shay’s Shay Mooney was in attendance along with his spouse, “I am a fan of her work and her as a person. This is the first time I look forward to watching this movie tonight. Nashville is being acknowledged for movie making. Nashville is a very tiny village. There is unity among everyone. We as writers want to be able to write like Karen Kingsbury.”
To which Matthew West the Christian Artist responded, “I’ve been friends with Karen for years, she’s always been a big supporter of mine with my music and we just struck up a friendship and I just have such a respect and admiration for her creative vision. And when she does something she does it to excellence and so, this movie’s going to be incredible.”
Rory Feeks went further to add, “It is a great thing, Karen Kingsbury preaching the gospel to the world, and I appreciate that.”
Kingsbury and her family have immersed themselves in their film. In any case, however, she wishes the film to speak for itself, even if it is described in the ‘christian’ box. Her son Tyler Russell Directed Someone Like You.
A great deal of enthusiasm about this movie and about people in general was expressed in Russell’s words “I’m so proud of [this movie], so proud of all the work that everyone put in. We had an amazing crew and cast. We made the movie in 24 days. It was a beautiful process. Our goal was to make something with excellence and to love on the cast and the crew as best we could. The movie is what we are making but if people feel loved in the process, they feel seen, that’s really what matters at the end of the day.”
I absolutely love the sizzling chemistry between actors Jake Allyn and Sarah Fisher hop gladly. In the same breath, one cannot forget the mesmerizing performance of Lynn Collins, who plays the mother of London Quinn in the projected film whom Figure might.
To start with I will first paint a picture regarding the confusion I faced in respect of who entreated the role of London Quinn and who played Andi Allen. Bafflement turned to something near admiration when I heard from Sarah Fisher that she snatched both roles.
Fisher was enthralled when she said, “To bring one of her amazing three dimensional characters to life is such an honour. But to do that for the second time, is such an exciting challenge for me. To be able to bring to life two characters was such a thrill. And Tyler (Russell) was amazing to me as an actor in that while we were in Alabama going back and forth being Andi and London on location he helped, and we did not fold over, even to the laugh.” Fisher added, “I have to say that Karen is so amazing. She is talented, very generous, and very nice. She was so nice to work with her.” Apart from the movie Someone Like You that will be released in different theatres from April 2nd, the other is the book series based on The Baxters by Kingsbury, which will begin streaming on Amazon on March 28th. The Baxters is the brainchild of Roma Downy (Touched By An Angel) who was also at the premiere to support her friend on the same project.
“I fell in love with the book series as a fan and am happy to produce and stepped into the role of Elizabeth Baxter, the matriarch. It is a family drama and I don’t think I have seen anything similar to it before. It has all the trials and tribulations that any family might have. But they are a family of faith and when the world brings them to their knees, life is of no value to them,” she recounted. “I am here because I am big Karen Kingsbury fan. I am so proud to wave the flag for her.”
Also on hand was The Baxter’s star Cassidy Gifford who now resides with her husband and baby in Nashville and plays the character of Reagan Decker. Her mother Kathie Lee Gifford lives in Nashville too. “The people are really nice, we’re here. It’s just a whole other ball game. I am here tonight to support Karen who I love with all my heart. Such an encouraging woman, so creative and works so hard. It’s a pleasure to come here and help her.”
Just like all of the characters that come from the mind of Karen Kingsbury, The Baxters is an uplifting and feel-good family drama that you really should watch. The Baxters will be available on Amazon Prime from 28th March.
It is often a common practice to compare Karen Kingsbury’s books and movies to works of Nicholas Sparks. But with Kingsbury’s creations, the other aspect is redemption. You know that the last scene is not the last.
