Death Fighter

Death Fighter

Here we have yet another non-essential, but enjoyable Thai made Action flick called Death Fighter. Originally made in 2012 and titled White Tiger (unlike the Gary Daniels’ classic!), its title has been changed to this and Maxim’s lowest level has been modified to keep the humor and action flowing within a small budget as necessarily allowed.

Martin Turner (the explosive star-making debut of martial artist Matt Mullins), which is such an American name(!), craves revenge for the death of his police associate, Conrad (the late Joe Lewis, as a last performer), whose name is often pronounced Catherine when it’s screaming.

He has to deal with corrupt power broker Peter (Jawed El Berni) and Valerie (Cynthia Rothrock), but lucky Thai girl Yu (Chiranan Manochaem) who’s too attractive and skinny to be convincing provides assistance, and so does Bobby Pau (Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson) who became a foreign contact and is in great shape and is the true reason to rent this movie. This is quite an ***ed up movie for those of you who enjoy thin plots.

Although The Expendables’ style of marketing is not utilized to its fullest, this can still be recommended because it has great production values, utilizes its cast of both newcomers and veterans (no bait-and switch here), and keeps everything restrained. The camera work is always steady and comparable to the digital camera speeds and performs beautifully in shooting stunning landscapes without resorting to the extreme level of brightness and the low sound level many indie films are afflicted with. The songs play electronically charged heavy gritty music over with a cheesy Filipino score from the late 80s and early 90s in a way that works and does not come off as trying too hard which is often the case in many major motion pictures.

If the movie had less slower scenes (don’t worry you will not need the fast forward button) and possibly come up with one clever villain plan and at least a few one-liners, then this would be more than just another typical tribute to any action movie. But at the same time it is nice to see that it does more things better that most of the independent films lack and is still worth renting for Wilson who at the end of the day makes this movie, the inviting atmosphere, un-stressful feel, the Rambo like final scene, Mullins working rather hard for his paycheck as B-Action king and Wilsons last duel with Rothrock.
