Oh, Mercy!
Just added to the catalog, Roubaix, One Lumière fully enters our selection of films to see on Amazon Prime Video. The film is inspired by a real-life news story that occurred in 2002 and by the documentary by Mosco Boucault Roubaix, Commissariat Central. Commissioner Daoud entrusts newcomer Louis with the case of an arson attack in a house in the very poor neighborhood of Roubaix. Louis admires Daoud and would like to learn from his instinct for truth and great professionalism in approaching and questioning suspects. When a brutal murder takes place in the same street, suspicion falls on Claude and Marie, two friends who claim their innocence. Louis and Daoud will do everything to come to terms with the affair.
Desplechin, in this noir with dramatic hues, blends cinema and social denunciation with great realism. So, he takes us to the discovery of a desperate and resigned Roubaix by showing us the daily life of its inhabitants and the police in the first part of the film. Since In the second act, the whole story is based on the double interrogation of Claude and Marie, with a fast and pressing rhythm. The interpreters’ rehearsals were perfect, starting with Roschdy Zem (Daoud) and Léa Seydoux (Claude).

We continue our list of films to see on Amazon Prime with a film from our house, written and directed by the brothers Fabio and Damiano D’Innocenzo. We are in the Roman suburbs, where a group of families lead a normal life in appearance but are full of dissatisfaction and deprivation. Presented in competition at the last Berlin Film Festival, Favolacce won the award for best screenplay on that occasion.
The latest effort by the brothers Fabio and Damiano D’Innocenzo should have arrived in Italian cinemas on April 16, 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic made sure that the film was distributed on on-demand platforms starting from May 11 last year. Elio Germano is the protagonist of this film not to be missed, above all to remind himself that Italian cinema has something to say and that he knows how to do it very well.
Sam Mendes
The race against time by two British army soldiers to stop an impending German attack; is a technically magnificent film nominated for the 2020 Oscars in ten categories, including best film and best director. So, to make 1917, Sam Mendes took inspiration from the stories of his grandfather Alfred, who had fought for two years on the French front. In the film, you can clearly perceive, with harsh realism, the horror of the trenches and the terrible echoes of the craft of war. 1917 is much more than a technical feat, it is an engaging and exciting film.
The film was shot by Mendes and the immense cinematographer Roger Deakins in several sequence shots. It was subsequently edited to give the viewer the impression of a single, very long sequence shot that leaves no way out and literally engulfs the story. However, out of ten 2020 Oscar nominations, 1917 won three awards: best photography, best special effects, and best sound.
