Thundu

Riyas Shereef

The movie Thundu is an Action Hero Biju-style story about cops’ lives, with a series of comic events. However, this film does not handle complaints or petitions; rather it tells us what goes on inside the station and among policemen. In short, there is no goodness or humanity in any of the characters or situations something that many filmmakers try to bring out.

Biju Menon plays Baby who is a Civil Police Officer. He always finds himself in trouble without knowing why and his rival officer Shigin played by Shine Tom Chacko is a junior in service but has cleared departmental tests for becoming senior CPO. The film just tells how these two start having issues between them when one day Shigin insults Baby at the station once and then he decides to write department test so that he can also become senior CPO thereby gaining more power than him.

Biju Menon naturally has comedy in him which doesn’t require much physicality like typical Malayali humor actors do but he seems to be holding back here probably because of playing a matured character.

This non-linear storytelling of the movie gets so lengthy and puzzling that you only realize much later that it’s still narrating about an old incident. To sum up Thundu offers slight novelty to cop story genre and some funny moments but lacks compellingness as a narrative.

Also disturbingly enough, negative depictions are shown wrapped up in humor making them seem alright – though some people might not take lightly such parts during watching this film.
