The Vault

The Vault

“The Vault” is a style of heist film we’ve all seen a million times, only this one is filmed beautifully so it feels worthwhile. No, I don’t think there is any point in seeing it because you can narrate the entire story even before the credits roll. I sometimes think Netflix has the funds to end world hunger but rather spends it picking up content like this.

When watching the movie does not give much attention to the film, it’s unnecessary depth if you read IMDB’s synopsis of the film, it states: ‘the plot follows the life of a genius engineering graduate whose interest lies in the safe of the bank of Spain.’ This is bad and careless and I’m guessing the blame is on the writers. This film focuses on Thom (Freddie Highmore), a Cambridge engineering student who worked out some oil bothering solution so that we get a quick montage of oil corporations fighting to have him on their team. Money doesn’t really seem to cut it for Thom.

He instead is focused on Walter’s (Liam Cunningham) professional approach to his plan that involves being forced to open the strongest safe on the planet to retrieve some information that was taken away from Walter. You know, that one potent offer the hero goes after after receiving a message, acts as instructed, ends up sitting in a bar, opposite an experienced actor who sells the character more than anything!

This is already familiar with his daughter, Walter’s daughter (I think it’s his daughter, they get more than close) Lorraine (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) who plays Thom in the game of bring Walter to her. She is the one who is going to snatch your purse, wearing a wig, and is possibly going to become Thom’s boyfriend.

Thus, who else do we recruit? We have Klaus (Axel Stein) the childish tech whizz who carries snacks, Simon (Luis Tosar) who has that rough and tough persona, and James (Sam Riley) who’s good enough to rank up but has trust issues in everyone except Lorraine. Everybody here? Check! This is going to take some work, getting in this vault.

That’s why we shall start with targeting their weaknesses! Start with a fake Russian superhero, never been done before, and greenhorn Thom has to go in to peel one smart move to build up his persona. Now that we have new information, we have to wait for the right weather. When is a better time than the World Cup Finals? Of course, great diversion and a way to introduce a countdown. I’m going to put it in this way as writers wait, five names!?

Writer’s Rafa Martinez, Andres Koppel, Borja Santaolalla, Michel Gazambide, and Rowan Athale inserted the intense looking, smart but soon to be outsmarted Gustavo (Jose Coronado) as the head of security. However, with five writers on the job, one has to understand the reason behind the lack of character development for this set of characters.

The great aspect about this film is the music. There is the music used when someone is contemplating something, pauses when there is a near death situation or danger, and silence when a joke comes in to liven the intensity created by the music. In essence, everything that we are seeing in here is not only familiar but has some traces in other works that portray similar characteristics of the film. Thom is not so smart after all, he appears to be the one seeing what everybody else is missing, which is only natural if one was to put in some extra thought.

I can only imagine the amount of does this movie cost, not only production design and set location but also the cast that has to be for this movie. It is very stylish, similar to films about robberies that America was making in the early 2000s. It even cuts together like one too. It has Freddie Highmore doing his best “if Dr. Shaun Murphy wasn’t autistic impression” for example. In any case, it’s just a pig with lipstick. I would only suggest this is the case if you are bored, have no more streaming options, and are in the mood for the kind of rhythm that a heist movie exudes.
