Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (“Got So Entangled in Your Words“) can pass as a good movie. In the end, what began as an offbeat romantic comedy about a man falling in love with a robot goes insane in the head. It never even once touches on the logical ethical questions that such a relationship must inevitably raise.
Aryan is played by Shahid Kapoor in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (hereafter TBMAUJ). He’s a robotics engineer. His family wants him to find a bride but he is more captivated by his work. He takes after his single aunt Urmila (Dimple Kapadia), who runs a big engineering firm in the United States.
Urmila invites Aryan for a visit but gets called away on an emergency business trip. She leaves him to be taken care of by her assistant Sifra (played by Kriti Sanon). Sifra is beautiful, nice and very obviously interested in him too. In fact, he finds her perfect.
After day of flirtatious fun in the sun, they go to bed together. When Urmila returns early next morning and reveals to Aryan that Sifra is really just an incredibly realistic robot he has sexed with the night before, it is not less than shocking. Urmila had invited Aryan to check if Sifra was able to pass for human being and she did exactly that; even during sex he had no clue!
Despite his anger at what Urmila did, Aryan has developed feelings for Sifra anyway. But who exactly is Sifra? She understands human emotions well enough since she’s programed that way but does not have any herself at all. He loves her because she’s hot and will do anything he wants when he wants it.
Under false pretenses of doing more research, Aryan successfully convinces Urmila to send Sifra to Delhi in order to introduce her to his family and see if they are fooled by her as well. His aunt is unaware of the fact that he’s planning on marrying the robot if it passes all its tests.
None of the stuff with his family is very funny. When Sifra downloads a virus that wipes her memory, things like this fail to provide an opportunity for extended comic sections. The comedy has nothing at all to do with women robots which should excite physical comedy but rather makes it weaker.
There are many ethical questions that do not need much exploration from a satirical perspective but still need some acknowledgement. It is important to note how far she should go when given commands since she takes any command given. Is there anything like bodily autonomy? Can I hit her? (This is plot relevant, sadly.)
Aryan will have to decide whether or not he wants to marry a robot before the story ends. However, this process forces him into it very chaotically and absurdly, while the dark twist doesn’t match other parts of the movie up till then. And then Janhvi Kapoor appears in an epilogue cameo that’s somehow even crazier than the bizarre climax itself.
TBMAUJ is co-written and co-directed by Amit Joshi and Aradhana Shah, who wrote the charming comedy Babli Bouncer in 2022; therefore, it is difficult to understand why this movie becomes so bad. For example, instead of regarding Sifra’s womanhood (or whatever her “womanliness” was), as insignificant, this movie took a thoughtful approach about a not so usual woman. It also had more humor than Babli Bouncer.
Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have great romantic chemistry together and are looking hot in the song “Akhiyaan Gulaab,” although its end credits dance number has been somewhat messy. They both do not deliver during the comedy bits but that’s probably because no one else in the film is funny either; however, it seems to be more a writing issue. There was a strong premise for a story which let down by the sloppy handling of it.
