Sons Of Liberty
It is not always possible to find writers who with such limited resources are able to transform their dreams into reality. Director Drew Hall is someone who has directed 3 movies in his early career. These movies were made on a budget where it would be extremely hard to even provide food for the crew, and Sons of Liberty (the third installment to the series) is exactly the type of movie that will make filmmaking some good fun as it is a visually loud and direct film encapsulated in one word: awesome.
There is an assertion that should be frowned upon that Sons of Liberty is a thrilling movie. Yet, stating that under this film’s low budget, there is no creativity or mood moments in filmmaking craft, is unfair because at times, the cinema does stop trying to hide its low budget and manages to be a steadily enjoyable action/thriller which would have been a real 90 minute blast if an acting spark could have ignited it.
Hall is at his best when the action takes control and in that moment there is a limitation to some average to bad performance from the leads. However, whenever there is interaction amongst the characters or movie dialogue happens, there is definitely a glaze over the eyeballs because of unending scientific explanations combined with unnecessary x-ray on the scope of the plot.
Sons of Liberty has as much entertaining lead turns in the case of the main players Adam Cardon and Catalina Soto-Aguilar as there was in a long waiting line at the DMV and when the talking begins, the viewer can only wonder why the filmmakers in Australia thought it was an exercise in self-restraint to have more than two utterly dry and boring conversations.
The movie would have been so much better with actors with at least half the charisma these two leads have and the confusion of the characters motives would have been minimized for most of the movie, the viewer will be so confused in the story that perhaps there were trying to hard and throwing the kitchen sink at it (murders, missing gun parts) when a more basic structure would have sufficed.
Having watched the Sons of Liberty, I can’t wait to see what Drew Hall has for us in his next film (his new thriller Convergence looks a lively one) and his competency in film direction is definitely evident even if, the material and actors are not quite there yet as it is with directorial style of production an actor who is beyond average level was seen.
This may be a computer whizz-kid making a film that looks like the TV movie that takes every single problem with filming in Toronto and turns it up to eleven but in reality, there are far more worse films being made out there now and the majority of those racking in four times the funding. Good start, but there is still room for improvement.
