Rich Kids

Rich Kids

This cute movie focuses on the adolescent drama of Franny (Trini Alvarado), a middle school student, who meets and becomes infatuated with new kid, Jamie (Jeremy Levy). The trailers revolve around the events and relationships involving both Franny and Jamie. Franny’s mother and father (played by John Lithgow and Kathryn Walker) are nearing a divorce while Jamie’s father (the hilarious Terry Kiser from Weekend at Bernie’s) is seen to be cool and mostly absent.

However, due to absence parents, Franny and Jamie have begun to go out of the customary boundaries when they drink alcohol, engage in (almost) harmless sexual activity, and see the world while their parents act unusually. One evening, all of a sudden, their parents find out that the children are missing and start looking for them rather desperately. Despite being known as repeating rich kids, it seems as if these children are better educated than their parents.

The narration is the backbone of the mainly unseen Rich Kids, written by Judith Ross and directed by Robert M. Young. It’s more of a kaleidoscopic snap shot of upstate New York, and the young actors delicate, yet editable performances fit perfectly within the frame.

The film is not very compelling once the credits start rolling, yet the anguish of the children portrayed on the screen stays behind. It is not what you would refer to as a classic in any sense of the word, but for all its faults, Rich Kids is a lovely little film that is worth the attention it gets. For all its exposure, Robert Altman produced this film.

For those who have waited a long time, Olive Films has finally released the film on blu-ray and it looks impressive in high definition. Although the film is likely to be sought by a small audience, it’s certainly worth keeping an eye out for. To my knowledge, this film has until now never been hearing a disc. Other features such as DVD have not been included. It is compatible with English subtitles, and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio widescreen.
