Red vs. Blue: Restoration (2024)

Red-vs.-Blue-Restoration
Red vs. Blue Restoration

Things start off with a crash for the favored dysfunctional soldiers, who are now dealing with their archenemy, The Meta, newly resuscitated and worse than ever. As usual, it’s up to the Reds and Blues to save the galaxy which is a pretty scary thought since they can hardly save themselves from arguing over who finished off the last box of choco puffs. But I’m getting off track.

While we follow Sarge, Grif, Simmons and Church through the story (among others) we’re treated to Saving Private Ryan meets Spaceballs levels of cinematic glory. The action? Spectacular. The humor? Sharper than a Needler spike. The plot? Same old winning mixture of action and silliness. But this time, not everyone makes it out alive. In a move that will surprise no one who has watched enough RvB to know better, Sarge dies in what should have been an exceedingly foolish moment for anybody who claimed they were “too old to go diving into any internet.”

And maybe just maybe his sacrifice for a Blue is the most heroic thing ever done on this show which is really saying something because Caboose has tried to fix tanks before.

But as much as bringing back The Meta was about reintroducing audiences to a familiar villain they love to hate, it also added another layer of existential dread. It’s not just about fighting bad guys, it’s about the Reds and Blues coming face to face with their pasts, their mistakes and what it means to be heroes. It’s deep stuff (and also an excuse to watch Grif get kicked into next week or so many weeks he loops around backwards through time again because tradition).

Matt Hullum directs with Burnie Burns writing at his side like always (they co-founded Rooster Teeth together), but never more perfectly than this time around. They’ve crafted a story that serves as both fitting bookend to the RvB saga and a beautiful valentine to fans who stuck around from the beginning. Every frame of Restoration drips with the kludge-y chaos and camaraderie that made Red vs. Blue a Machinima classic. From the laugh out loud gags to blink and you’ll miss it Easter eggs (did anybody else catch the Puma reference?), this movie’s got it all.

And just when you think it might be over, in true Red vs. Blue fashion, it’s not so keep your eyes glued until after the credits for a scene that might make Ferris Bueller proud. Because in RvB land, nothing is ever really over until the fat Warthog sings.
