PT Sir Movie Review
A movie like PT Sir can be appreciated only if you know what you want from it. And if what you want is an ode to heroism without mainstream trappings or elevation moments for the central character, then this film might not work for you. This is still another mainstream Tamil film that has a male protagonist fighting for women’s rights after seeing the pathetic state they are in around him. The truth is many of these films use the woman’s predicament as a catalyst for the transformation of the hero and his journey without necessarily dealing with the issue at hand sensitively enough. The maltreatment of women is perhaps every Tamil director’s favourite subject right now but most movies don’t do justice with regards to handling such issues with care; they just exploit them for their own benefit as far as character development goes in relation to heroes alone. For instance something terrible happening to a lady becomes instrumental in changing Kanagavel (Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi) into becoming good from bad but PT Sir does better than this by not only looking at what Nandini played by Anikha Surendran went through but also focusing on her story. A lot depends on why one watches PT sir because different people expect different things from it; those hoping for non-mainstreamishness coupled with absence of hero-elevation moments may find themselves disappointed here while others might appreciate some level of sensitivity shown especially during sections dealing with harassment meted against Nandini which brings about change in both attitude towards life among her family members as well as society’s perception about them.
We have seen in many movies and even our society where parents get away easily even though themselves shame & blame their daughters after she takes extreme actions following sexual harassment. But PT Sir does not only show how close ones can make a woman feel helpless and worthless but also makes us laugh because it is a comedy-drama, so the seriousness of the subject matter cannot be taken throughout as there are light moments in between. PT Sir might appeal more if we look at it as being meant to reach out to wider audiences while still entertaining them rather than seeing this film from an angle where we expect too much depth into understanding what exactly happens during sexual molestation experiences faced by women.
What sets apart PT sir from other commercial movies based on similar storylines though is where the main character works, Kanagavel being a physical education teacher at school. His love story with Kashmira Pardeshi who acts as another teacher from same institution falls flat just like unnecessary track involving young kid studying at that same place trying to compete with him for her attention. The music by Hiphop Tamizha keeps the spirit alive through these parts which have been done cartoonishly but also adds drama & tension where necessary later on while switching between houses in mourning and celebrating without necessarily over-emphasizing anything.
The vastness of the movie is enhanced by this matching perspective that everything happens due to providence. Alongside what has been said before, one more thing about the movie’s success is Thiagarajan’s antagonist, because he succeeded in becoming a villain with strong presence and aura which makes him powerful as an opponent.
Casting a female actor who is forty years old as mother to thirty year old male protagonist doesn’t feel right. However, Devadarshini deserves credit for her acting skills that enabled us overlook this fact and believe in a mother-son bond shared between Adhi and her.
