(Pri)sons

(Pri)sons looks like a mix of extreme horror and old school action cinema. Finland may not be the first country you think of when it comes to action cinema but they have certainly dabbled in various branches of exploitation cinema over the years and (Pri)sons definitely looks exploitative.

(Pri)sons follows a ragtag group of criminals who are forced to band together when an underground marketplace for illegal activities is attacked by an army of bloodthirsty assassins.

(Pri)sons is the most ambitious film to date from director-cinematographer Esa Jussila who has had a long career in genre and exploitation underground film. The movie deals with organized crime, degeneration of human beings and the natural will to survive. The film stands out because of its amount of violence, special effects and demanding stunts that all actors had to perform.

“To me this film is a combination of two genres I love very much which are old school action movies and extreme horror. And I think it’s a genre cocktail that will give some unique thrills to the audience. I basically wanted to make a big love letter to genre greats as well as films you’d pick up from renting or seeing at midnight in a shady theatre, down to technicalities such as lighting and practical special FX. It’s the ultimate video violence movie from the 90’s that never was” says director Jussila.

The film features Jarmo Pukkila (Tuftland), Ari Savonen (Tuftland), Jere Saarela (Red Static), Gareth Lawrence (Werewolves of the Third Reich), Veera W. Vilo (Free Skate), Ilkka Koivula (Sisu), Renne Korppila (Rendel), Sami Huhtala (Rendel), Markus Tilli(Free Skate) and Karoliina Blackburn (Hormones). The film introduces Katriina Rajaniemi as the female lead.

The film is produced by genre-oriented TR Productions and distributed by film studio Bright Fame Pictures that has released Free Skate(2022), Red Static(2021) and Tuftland(2017).

“This film clearly isn’t for everyone but for those who love proper action and genre films this is a real treat” says Roope Olenius from Bright Fame Pictures.
