Point Man
Has to be no wonder then, why that two miles into the film one start fiddling with the remote or the switch on the television. ‘ Point Man’ is concentrated on the character aspect. The American soldiers suffer a lot more through the course of the film, then what the viewer is provided in consideration of the war itself within Vietnam. Along with the film some interesting topics are uncaught and worth mentioning, like the stereotypes, the racism and violence; although one may say that the rigid and cheapish move does take away from the movie’s polish.
The narrative mostly revolves around a small unit of soldiers trapped in the hot, humid, sticky jungles of Vietnam. In the center of this stands Casper, a black man with an angry heart who will do whatever it takes to get what is right. After a disagreement with a squad member of his, Silas Meeks, nothing follows but a journey to see the unit immersed into strife, and then the aftermath of chaos that ensues.
The focal point of the drama here simply comes down to one split second choice that ends with the unit splitting. Even in this moment, the squad’s loyalties are tested as human atrocities unfold in war. All of this goes to build up the tension and anticipation towards the final battle scenes that features lots of gunfire, and blood-bath from both sides.
There are some very good character parts as well and Casper is in particular a very easy character to cheer for. His confidence and notions for equal rights really show his purpose on the squad and opposite Meeks, the two share a very entertaining rivalry that throughout the film develops quite nicely.
Point Man is an interesting film that starts off on a great note and has plenty of scope to do more but sticks firmly to the basic structure, essentially giving viewers the feeling of been there done that. The film begins with a thriller element as a point man gets killed while in the forefront of the action and iconic scenes involving soldiers in chaos are extremely well made. If only the entire film contained such exquisite directorial concepts, there wouldn’t be a chilling draught in the middle. However, there is a coherence in the editing and overall look and feel of the film which makes it more engaging rather than monotonous.
Point Man is a good film for people who like war or strong character centric films. The plot is quite gripping, particularly due to the twist that occurred at half time in the movie. It was quite unexpected. A lot of themes which run throughout anchor the whole film as well. It’s not without its flaws, but the writing is solid and if you like the storyline you will be entertained.
