In 1985 Maryland, William Cross is a highly recruited Baseball player. He seems to have it all figured out as a future all star athlete. But when his high school coach manipulates him into playing football by taking advantage of his loyalty, things take a turn for the worst and he suffers a devastating injury. He realizes that the hardest fights aren’t in the sports arena, but against the expectations that others have for his future (and that he himself has) he learns that he must write his own story.
His belief in his recovery waxes and wanes but it’s buoyed up by a strong support system including family members; teammates who become friends; community members like doctors and nurses.
The setting of Phoenix Reborn takes place in an extended suburb of Washington DC where diversity is celebrated throughout both the community and school which bleeds into the baseball team itself. This authenticity comes from shows such as The Goldbergs or Stranger Things representing pop culture from the 80’s along with sports dramas like League of their Own series or Ted Lasso continuing to be popular among viewers today. However, Phoenix reborn sets itself apart through its message about resiliency in youth who can use their naivety mixed with feelings of invincibility as a catalyst to rewrite other peoples’ stories about them.
Phoenix Reborn is also about learning boundaries around popularity, physicality and self-image in life; after being hurt those things became traps for William because once they disappeared so did everybody else’s interest or respect towards him too except one person named Chris who loved him despite everything else falling away. Therefore at this point what matters most isn’t how many times someone knocks us down but rather how many people still stand beside us while we’re getting back up.
It was there during some darkest periods when Will fought tooth-and-nail just trying not only get himself better again but also bring hope back into everyone’s eyes around him; this type of resilience often goes unnoticed in our world where people are constantly told they can’t recover from their circumstances.
Phoenix reborn is a story about a young person who seems abandoned due physical damage and serves as direct commentary on ‘The Man in the Arena’, American Medical System, Gladiator Mentality of Modern Sports. Throughout Phoenix Reborn there runs one main theme which is that no matter what struggle people may have or how much time it takes there will always be necessary components for recovery and rebuilding. We all have the ability to rebuild ourselves; we must reimagine ourselves continuously.
