A ballad is a kind of poetry or song that tells a story in short stanzas. Every line of the ballad is a lyrical poem which relates tales about heroism, love, tragedy and folklore. Ballads often use casual language and may start with an unusual setting or opening. Another important characteristic of ballads is the use of supernatural elements to create unique sense of storytelling. Strong feelings are frequently evoked by ballads and express passion or intensity. They deal with many themes including loyalty, grief, treachery, revenge as well as courage.
Additionally, Folk Ballads are one type among others where they come from oral tradition within specific regions or cultures, such types tell stories through verses having tightly woven plots with defined characters who have conflicts that need resolutions, repetition plays a significant role here since it helps to emphasize on main ideas concerning given narratives subjects.
Representing different emotions like happiness sadness achievement failure etcetera also forms part but not all such kinds do so always thus making them versatile in nature. In this way thus people can easily understand what was happening during those times since they relate themselves directly towards their own pasts hence eliciting empathy together with connection between now and then besides showcasing heritage.
Starting from 2008 Coke studio has been striving hard to preserve various kinds of Ballads through some amazing singers across Pakistan. “Par Channa De (Across River Chenab),” which was produced by Coke Studio in collaboration with Indian singer Shilpa Rao and Pakistani band Noori represents another form of folk Ballad like those mentioned above mentioned before this one came about during their efforts however it still falls under typical category because everything remains same except there are additional factors included into its creation such as usage local musical instruments along traditional melodies infused together with poetic storytelling were used here too.
The track is an emotional rendition that combines elements Sufi music contemporary soundscapes while being sung heartfelt manner where one can easily feel what characters are going through. “Par Channa de” reflects on norms within societies as well portrays love longing among other emotions associated with them but also points out towards sad ending thus indicating tragic romance took place somewhere around Punjab region probably during ancient times when people used to speak both Urdu and Punjabi languages.
‘Par Channa De’ by the artist portrays a beautiful love story between Sohni and Mahiwal. This tale comes from Punjab, a region in Pakistan. A young and pretty girl named Sohni lived in a small village near Chenab River where she used to create beautiful pots out of clay. She became famous for her pottery skills all around that area. Once upon a time when she was working, Mahiwal who was a horse trader from Bukhara came to her village and fell in love with her at first sight because of her attractiveness.
Similarly, Sohni also started liking him due to his nice behavior towards everyone including herself as well as others around them. As they go on with their relationship it turns out into something more interesting that is described as an intense bond filled with love and desire for each other’s company forever. However, according to Sohni’s parents she was supposed get married another man from her own village but this never stopped them since he could not live without seeing her every single day so eventually they let her know about everything then later forbid their daughter see or meet any guy outside there because it could cause conflict between communities therefore force marry someone whom they thought will be best for their daughter’s future life at home, For example one day when people heard about this news some villagers reported back saying let us leave here forever which led mahiwal abandon worldly things live like fakeer hut across river chenab.
The passion of Mahiwal left sohnis heart burning with love and thus she had to devise an unsafe measure of crossing the River Chenab every night on an oven-fired earthen jar just to be with him. Sohni would hide this pot near riverside during daytime then pick up at nightfall swim across after retrieving it from the same spot following evening visits were always successful until those closest started showing suspicion over her whereabouts thus within no time these dare devil acts became public knowledge within village.
However, as if things were not bad enough already sohni’s sister in law discovered what she was up to and decided play a cruel prank on her. Before Sohni went for usual routine that evening instead replacing burnt clay pot with raw one, Consequently when sohni went into water unaware of switch using crude jar hoping it would help keep her afloat unfortunately while swimming the earthy vessel started dissolving forcing Sohni struggle hard remaining buoyant but eventually sinking deep into chenab river. Mahiwal seeing this jumped after his beloved lifeless body got consumed by waves from there he also died. To end their story on tragic note both lovers perish however they reunite in afterlife.
The ballad continues with the pot’s frustrated response to Sohi about natural occurrences during their conversation. The phrase “Raat haneri nadi thathaan maardi Ariye ariye haan ni ariye” shows how claypot is afraid of the journey and advises Sohni not to be stubborn and go back because it is getting late at night and waves are hitting hard. This stanza also creates suspense for the audience as it warns them that something bad might happen soon. These stanzas have an impersonal tone which is one of the main characteristics of a ballad where a story is told through conversations between two people Sohni and the clay pot.
Moreover, throughout this song there is continuous repetition of lines “Paar chana de disse kulli yaar di Ghariya ghariya aa ve ghariya” which serves to heighten action and clarify main themes of narrative. The ballad moves on with these lines: “Kachi meri mitti kacha mera naam ni Haan main na-kaam ni Kacchiyaan da hunda kacha anjaam ni Eh gal ‘aam ni Kacheyaan te rakhiye na umeed paar di.”
In general, these lines continue with the story as they reveal pot’s feelings about losing faith in getting across safely through river.
The phrases “Kacchiyaan da hunda kacha anjaam ni Eh gal ‘aam ni Kacheyaan te rakhiye na umeed paar di” emphasizes on pots distress by declaring that being made out of clay it cannot cross over deep waters since they will melt away. The lines demonstrate agony in such situation when pot says that I cannot take Sohni across because am unstable or inconsistent, moreover this verse affirms that unsteady things should not be trusted upon as they only reach uncertain ends which are awful but everyone knows it.
On a surface level the lines might seem like just a conversation between Clay pot and Sohni but when we look deeper into these words they show us that there is more to this story than meets the eye. The stanzas represent society in a wider sense. Various phrases used throughout can illustrate abominable characteristics or aspects of communities and individuals within them.
The term “Kacha” which means unreliable or uncertain could be applied to people specifically. The line “Kacheyaan te rakhiye na umeed paar di” seems like a warning not to trust people with oneself because they are fickle and undependable therefore an inconsistent or capricious source for bringing one through their crises and concerns. By embedding terrible things in stories about love gone wrong, Ballad “Par Channa de” hides its inner corruption of society while highlighting those much darker issues that lurk beneath.
Other than this, these lines also represent the main themes of blending religious elements in a ballad. According to the Islamic faith, humans are made from clay; hence “Kacheyaan te rakhiye na umeed paar di” means that we should not expect much from an undependable and fickle product but rather place our hopes with the creator who made us. The line also reveals the spiritual message and religious theme of the song hidden beneath Sohni and Mahiwal’s story.
To return the story to its climax, after many repetitions of “paar chanaa de disse kulli yaar di Ghadeya ghadeya aa ve ghadeya Raat haneri nadi thaathaan maardi Ariye ariye haan ni ariye,” it begins again with Sohni comforting a clay pot which is afraid of losing heart during its helplessness to transport her across river as she desperately wants meet Mahiwal tonight.
The lines “vekh challaan paindiyan na chadden dil ve Haan laike khil ve Ajj mahiwaal nou main jana mil ve Haan aiho dil ve,” shows Sohni’s strong desire to get back together with her lover Mahiwal. These could be seen as an endless call by one lover for another which may describe what Sohni could be going through emotionally.
Nevertheless, an excruciating parting comes when she says “Yaar noon milegi ajj laash yaar di,” meaning beloved would find lover’s dead body. This line is very important because it foreshadows sad death of Sohni and end of hopeless love affair between two people who can’t be together.
In summary, ‘Par Channa De’ is a good example of folk ballads having different themes that revolve around the central idea about ill-fated love story between sohni and Mahiwal. The song begins with a surprise and deals with only one event in the whole story presented as it happens which is common in folk ballads.
Also, like abruptness at the start, there is also a disastrous ending where lovers’ destinies are left to chance thus unpredictable fortune befalling them can be seen as indicative of storytelling tradition used in this type of narrative. Furthermore, there are various supernatural elements included such as conversation between sohni & clay pot or Sohni’s voyage upon river on top of clay pot, these make it an excellent example of folk balladry. Additionally, repeating “Paar chaana de disse khulli yaar di Ghadeya ghadeya aa ve ghadeya” several times draws attention towards love & tragedy being central theme while underlining Sohni’s feelings during tragic events.
Moreover “Par Channa de” brings out best culture of punjab through rich use punjabi language and incorporation objects like pots thereby signifying importance pottery trade within state of Punjab.Lastly, song takes listener through deep emotional journey filled with love, commitment bravery and tragedy thus fusing traditional instruments melody with modern arrangements serves to highlight major storylines.
