Outlawed
If there’s one thing Outlawed fails, it’s ambition; be it the epic Hans Zimmer sound-like music score, which is simply exhilarating right through to the stunning action explosive climax, this is a movie which always seems like it could be a lot more than it is.
First off, I have to tip my hat to Adam Collins who is not only my lead (who I’ve been told resembles a young Bradley Cooper), but as I former Army officer he wrote, produced and directed this picture, which is quite an achievement in its own right, and indeed more than I will probably ever manage to accomplish.
We can be certain that Collins is not going to remain where he is for a long time and yes he’s got the ability to become the next action star. From his IMDB page he probably served as a command in the Royal Marines for six years and went for two operational tours including Afghanistan.
He is also a professionally trained military specialist qualified in helicopter abseiling/fast roping, amphibious training, unarmed combat, and firearms training. He is also a black belt in Karate and kickboxing. After all this I am the one who feels exhausted after huffing and puffing while climbing the stairs to my own apartment.
Outlawed has Collins in his “particular set of skills” which apply nowhere else but in action anyhow I found the movie slightly shall I say discontinuous and frankly it is quite a stretch to find good acting from the supporting actors, they were amateurish to say the least. The pacing files included a lot of inconsistencies and overly excessive cuts and scenes which could have been clipped out thus shortening it to 90 minutes. The plot itself was void of any dramatic tension and did not manage to keep me drawn in say for example some decisions made by the characters were just absurd.
It is possible I overlooked something as I was busy checking out my Instagram during film watching, but the character Smudge is quite a loose cannon (and a knob too) ‘accidentally’ responsible for a kid getting shot and eventually killed, or so Capt. Levin asserts. Jake (Collins) for some reason seeks him out for assistance later saying that he knew he would be able to count on him.
You mean to say you can count on someone who was reckless and a total jerk toward you, and who killed an unarmed boy? What a stand-up guy. I don’t think we have ever had any indication that this character is capable of anything else apart from being unhelpful and mean, which is why it is hard believing that it is this man who was so easily persuaded that Jake wanted him to help him with anything.
As cool as the music score was, it sort of felt appropriate for a different movie, it had such a big sound that it did not fit what was happening in the film quite well.
I have to say, Adam Collins does great and is undoubtedly the best thing in the film where he convincingly performs during the battle scenes. Considering the film’s budget, the action was quite good too with a few squibs, brawls, gun battles, and the last 20 minutes are very satisfying. The guy who just had his legs blown off is sure not going to make a comeback for footballs practice next week.
All in all, Outlawed is an interesting enough Brit action flick with Collins definitely worth keeping an eye on; how I longed for better pacing and better acting. I am, however, curious to see what Collins will do next.
