Max Linder was a pioneer in the film industry and achieved international stardom. The only monument to him is Max Linder Panorama, a historic cinema in the heart of Paris. However, if we ask spectators what the name means, hardly any of them would know the answer. If we ask who Charlie Chaplin is, on the other hand, they will recognize him immediately.
He was born Gabriel-Maximilien Leuvielle in a town near Bordeaux called Saint Loubès. Though he started out as just one among many early filmmakers, he became an overnight sensation whose popularity reached across Europe and even as far as Russia and America where millions idolized him. It was Charlie Chaplin who taught him everything and built upon Linder’s character which had been created by himself an ingenious and brave boulevardier. So why did such an important person from the history of cinema slip our minds?
It’s because Max Linder’s life story is so dramatic and epic that it could be told from his perspective today: We will interview five key figures who knew Max personally during their lifetime on camera; all interviews reenacted using visual language borrowed directly from films or photographs made between 1900-1925 with actors speaking lines written based off original texts spoken by real people being interviewed at the time alongside this narrative retelling of Linders’ life through reenactment shot as though they were scenes lifted straight out of early silent movies another strand will run throughout where archival footage gets colorized & sonorized by known masters working today in Europeans archives then mixed together adding some dramatization set within same period look but showing events not captured historically which will allow us to bring the present moment into max linders’ story.
Ultimately our film aims not only at reviving this incredible personality called Max Linder but also at revealing the beginnings of cinema giving insight into a stars-making process that took place over a hundred years ago and seems to remain the most intriguing part of the contemporary media landscape.
