NASA spacecraft disintegrates during reentry. An unusual spore is found on the surface of the metal debris which can withstand space and Earth temperatures. After infecting Tucker Kaufman, he transforms into a slimy cocoon overnight while doctors fail to find a cure.
The next morning he looks fine again, if not really nice, and this does not sit well with Carol because after five years of neglect he suddenly wants visitation rights with their son. Also, one of her patients insists that her husband is not her husband. (There are similar claims about a lot of people since the crash.) In fact everybody who came into contact with the crash site acts like they’re somebody else sometimes.
It turns out that what happened was everyone who touched anything at ground zero became infected with an alien virus that alters DNA so human beings become exact physical duplicates but without souls until you fall asleep, at which point you wake up as part of some new emotionless brotherhood.
That’s the world in which Carol must try to stop the unstoppable with her scientist boyfriend Ben. But all she really wants to do is get her son back from Tucker because his life is in danger and he might be able to provide them a cure for it.
Secondarily? “Stay awake,” she says, filling a hypodermic needle with a drug and shrugging off its obvious intended purpose though it doesn’t stay that way for long.
You know what’s going to happen as soon as she says it when she fills that hypodermic needle up with Truth Serum or whatever it’s going to turn out being instead of sticking it in her heart where we both know it belongs. And by “we” I mean “you,” but still.
About twenty years later, the title suddenly became related to the Watergate Scandal, only this time it is directed toward our distrust of authority and its effect on people’s sense of self against a lackadaisical society. In 1993, Body Snatchers made a third appearance as the pod people descended upon Earth once again. However, this time there was no mystery involved. It was just a lot of blood and guts leading up to an unanswered question mark which seems like a fitting representation of the ‘90s if you ask me. “We’re gonna become mindless aliens? Alright then, pass me that latte.”
So naturally viewers will probably try to impose their own interpretations upon what they see as being the “real” point behind the 2007 film. For example, star Nicole Kidman believes that it suggests “we’re trying to devalue our emotions and make ourselves far more of a collective sort of group of people that don’t have individual reactions to things.” But she also sees it as being about individuals reaching out for each other during extraordinary times and how powerful those connections can be.
My take? At its heart all The Invasion does is make one wonder about what we might give up if ever succeeded in creating world without wars or violence. The moment someone falls victim to this alien virus peace breaks out around everywhere else in world till humans show up as anything but human beings which script refers such achievements at grandeur accomplished within planet where person would stop being themselves really accidental statement concerning original sin while man remains sinful creature warfare hatred among him will never cease.
But that’s about as deep as it gets with these thoughts; mostly The Invasion spends too much time worrying over Carol’s personal problems than anything else usually involving her shooting or stunt driving way past zombified ex-friends who now want eat them brains.
Apparently studio wasn’t happy Oliver Hirschbiegel finished work so they brought director James McTeigue and writer/producers Andy Larry Wachowski team from V for Vendetta to rewrite and reshoot some key scenes. As such, final Invasion is a fast paced mix of violence and suspense with lots of unanswered questions that you’ll never even realize were there because if you blink at right time it’ll be over before know it. If you’re fan of the Wachowski Bros (they also made Matrix movies) then this may strike as being super cool sci fi action movie filled with all kinds hidden meanings, but everyone else will probably just leave thinking about what Nicole Kidman did to her face.
