When the trailer and teaser for Guruvayoor Amabalanadayil released, one question was on everyone’s mind. Will Prithviraj’s eccentricity match the energy of the rest of the cast? However, within the first 30 minutes of this film, director Vipin Das reveals just how high the humor pitch is and why Anandan had to be in such an exaggerated mode. Guruvayoor Amabalanadayil is a typical Deepu Pradeep character comedy that starts off with a bang and ends up as a decent light-hearted movie.
So, it is about Vinu Ramachandran’s wedding. Vinu works in the Middle East and is getting married to Anjali. What’s interesting here is that Vinu has more attachment towards Anand Anjali’s elder brother as he has been helping him emotionally get over his first love for quite some time now. In contrast with this happy occasion happening around them both these individuals are going through different phases in their lives where one person is dealing with his past while other person struggles with present problem i.e. Anandan whose marriage life goes through rough patch because he doesn’t see eye to eye with his wife Parvathy about anything anymore etcetera etcetera.
You know what I mean by saying so many words without actually saying anything? Yeah! That’s exactly what happens throughout this Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil which deals mainly with two brothers in law who find themselves trapped between love, loyalty and truth when some unexpected truths are unveiled during their sister’s wedding preparations itself. It felt like watching Perilloor Premier League series or any other movies scripted by Deepu Pradeep because there always has been unique way given by writer-director while creating characters where central conflict becomes funniest part among all these stories. What makes it even more hilarious than usual though ? Is it only because they didn’t wait till middle part of movie to show us why those two guys hate each other so much ? No! Not at all. The thing is that from beginning itself everything seems to be revolving around marriage ceremony as if someone wanted us think “ohh how cute” but halfway through we realize there’s really nothing else happening except for people coming together celebrate love blah blah. You get my point right?
Basil Joseph has performed effortlessly as Vinu, an insecure and underconfident hero. Though he has done similar characters in other movies, but this time it’s different. I loved his energy at the starting when he was with Prithviraj in combination scenes without actually seeing him. Prithviraj being a villain is always a treat to watch, but Prithviraj doing humor can go wrong sometimes, so making him that comical villain was something which I wanted to see and like I said before also in this review itself that meter of his humor works perfectly for this movie. Nikhila Vimal’s character as she said herself in interviews also that it’s not a full-length character with many lines; But Parvathy is a character which is integral to the plot and Nikhila covered up for the lack of dialogue with her confused expressions which were pretty hilarious. Anaswara Rajan doesn’t have much to do here because whole focus of the film is on Anand vs Vinu thingy. Siju Sunny, Saafboi, Joemon Jyothir etc are there in supporting cast along with experienced names like Jagadeesh sir Baaiju sir etc.. Yogi Babu’s casting might help the movie have some presence in Tamilnadu post Manjummel Boys scenario.
If you look at Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil humor it is kind of blend between Vipin Das creations and Deepu Pradeep creations. There are loud characters and loud comedy assigned to them also there are characters who don’t have too many lines given subtle side of humor. Hence fun part about story has almost all varieties into it. Its actually that much awaited third act kudos to production design team and visual effects department for making those portions authentic looking on screen where we expect some big showdown but instead let down happens because its bit unexciting & thematically exhausting also there is not much tension in audiences mind therefore whole Yogi Babu army and even Nandanam references felt like a damage control strategy which wasn’t bad as well.
Guruvayoorambala Nadayil is breezy loud comedy movie with consistent humor in dialogues making every character funny at least once. It’s an engaging watch despite the finale lacking tightness that you’ll feel. If you have liked quirkiness in Deepu Pradeep’s writing then Guruvayoorambala Nadayil won’t disappoint you at all.
