The current instalment in the “Detective Conan” franchise is causing quite a stir in Japan, especially after its predecessor made more than 10 billion yen at the box office. Reports on 21 April indicate that this latest film has already grossed over 6.5 billion yen, surpassing the previous movie’s record.
In Japan, any film that can reach such figures as 10 billion yen is considered a hit a league where only Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and Your Name have been part of before now. Haikyuu may also join them after watching this film I am convinced that it will make it to the blockbuster success list.
- Why?
- And so why?
- This picture is replete with elements that make you want to watch it over and over again.
- Character Ensemble:
It brings together various characters from other Conan films as well as those from different anime series. In case one is not familiar with some of them like Momiji Oooka or Soushi Okita, a quick brief about these individuals might be helpful prior to viewing the movie. It would be nice to see these movies before getting into theater if you have time:
- ・”Detective Conan vs Phantom Thief Kid” (2024)
- ・”Detective Conan: Crossroad in the Ancient Capital” (2003)
- ・”Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter” (2017)
Complex Storylines:
Several interlinking characters and plots can make story difficult for people to understand when watched once. This episode occurs in Hakodate, Hokkaido and makes references to history like Hijikata Toshizo who was a famous vice-commander of Shinsengumi, hence there may be need for some background knowledge here particularly among international audience. The close association between Hakodate, Goryokaku fortification and Hijikata provides depth which forces many viewers to delve deeper into research after they have watched it for the first time and go back for the second.
Romance Subplot:
The narrative’s substantial part involves the development of Heiji and Kazuha’s relationship through Kid rivalry with Heiji. The brochure brings out their past very well, a fact that will probably draw many fans of this romantic relationship to watch the movie again. In addition, Ran’s worry over them also lends some emotional weight to these events.
This entry is slightly less suspenseful than some other entries in the series, but there are different points of tension that would appeal more to women about 70% of people who went to the cinema were females based on what I observed.
Overall Review:
From the very beginning scene featuring Hijikata Toshizo up to its final moment, I found this film completely engrossing as it had no moment allowing any kind of distraction. This is a highly recommended viewing experience in theatres where you can fully appreciate how every frame has been brought into life by details animation and direction.
Moreover, I strongly agree with what is stated in a pamphlet that Hakodate would be crowded with fans going to pilgrimage at locations seen in this film. Conan followers are bound to flock over there given that Hokkaido is one of Japan’s most popular travel destinations and especially Hakodate. Don’t forget about HAKODATE!
