Each time I hear that a novel takes place in the American South, I get excited and nervous all at once. Is the setting going to feel real for this Southern girl or will there be stereotyped characters, complete with double first names, who make my skin crawl? You guessed it, sister, I ate this Christmas-themed novella up.
Weezie Foley was born and raised in Savannah, GA to be a lady but right now she’s muttering some four-letter words as she tries to finish the Christmas decorations for her antiques store. She is hellbent on beating out the trendy shop across the square owned by the gay couple but when she steps back after glue gunning on some Williamsburg-esque fruit and foliage, it just doesn’t do it. A blue Christmas tree pin and some old Elvis records provide inspiration. With her win, Weezie is definitely in the holiday mood. Too bad Daniel tends to get depressed over old family heartaches this time of year. She hopes a bottle of fine wine bought at auction with Bebe plus an old-timey family Christmas dinner will set him up to pop the question but when all is said and done takes someone from Daniel’s Christmas past and Weezie’s Christmas present to steer them toward their Christmas future.
I enjoyed this gently funny, very Southern, lighthearted story so much. It has enough poignant moments to ground it but manages not to be too sappy. Even though I think Weezie was crazy for leaving her truck unlocked in the historic district, I have to admit that I love how open-hearted she was with a certain character. And I had to laugh that when she thinks her house has been broken into, the first thing she checks is the family silver Very Southern! All of your books set in Savannah are going on my list so I can see what else Weezie gets up to along with her friends. B for “Blue Christmas.” Oh, and I almost forgot Wezzie’s present wrapping. I have a friend who does that. Every gift I get from her is a little work of art. I hate to open the suckers because the wrapping is so cute but I know she’ll have given me the perfect gift.
