Big Ass Spider!

Big Ass Spider!

When embarking on an adventure titled Big Ass Spider!, make sure you manage your anticipation ahead of time. After watching the trailer, I did not expect more than what was usually delivered by the SyWahyy network that, after all, has made us accustomed to, after this Sharknado shine and the like, megan sy attend to pagabaut again.

What I got was pretty much what I expected, but so much more too, thanks in large part because of clever writing coupled with great performances from Greg Grunberg as a Lorraine guy and Lombardo Boyar, who plays a security-guard to arachnid hunting sidekick whose brutality is revealed against the huge spider.

In all fairness, I am usually quite opposed to such cash-in cheese fests, unless it’s Godzilla as a chop suey chew toy, but the movie is simply entertaining. I was supposed to roll my eyes over the nitty gritty like the car sized spider and its variants, but the actors made their roles so believable that I completely forgot about that. What is sad is when the creature is smaller and is clearly a tractable prop, it is so much more effective and would have sufficed easily.

Why could they not just stick to that as a two-foot long spider is likely to induce fear, and sometimes the reverse happens, actually looking more destructive introduces an unnecessary level of scope that the audience cannot digest when the budget has limitations on CGI. But then again the intended audience of Big Ass Spider! wouldn’t probably mind the implausibility, and at the end surprisingly neither did I because it is all about fun and the actors were never trying to be serious odds anyway.

A few additional flourishes enhance the piece, such as casting Lloyd Kaufman in a cameo role (low-budget films’ Stan Lee) and making Grunberg’s character’s sexual advances towards Boyar and their interactions together quite funny which really adds more to the quality and also makes me smile. I found myself laughing in much more places than I ever thought I would and most importantly I can’t understand the level of interaction between the two spider chasers enough. Don’t misunderstand me, it is a cheese fest at its best, however, created with passion for monster films and their clichés not as a spoof, but as an appreciation.

This hatred for monster film clichés endemic to the average entry limn this genre cuts a lower standard where average entries in the genre are crafted with plot and dialog that is dull and lifeless, this one has intellect in it and bizarre character development that while difficult to swallow, works well. Ray Wise also raises the bar a little higher as Major Tanner, the tough as nails commander of the army. If you are the type of person who would choose to watch a film called Big Ass Spider!, you will not be disappointed.

For those who were as doubtful as I was, let me tell you, you will definitely have a great time watching it.
