Samuel Habib claims to feel most excluded when he is at his cousin’s wedding in “The Ride Ahead.” Indeed, this is the only time when Samuel has been left on his own. His loved ones have always tried hard for him not to be left out of anything, considering he can hardly move due to GNAO1 a rare and severe neuromental disorder that makes swallowing difficult and locks him down in a wheelchair. However, a marriage ceremony of somebody around his age just serves as another reminder of all the other things he hasn’t been able to do physically because of that, so he says in voiceover, “I’m trying to figure out how to do everything I want to do, but nobody tells you what to do, especially as an adult with a disability.”

For the general public already alone it may appear quite unique even if we stick cameras onto our wheelchairs facing ourselves or outward through two eventful years when finishing high school and transitioning into college Habib spends documenting life but where it gets really interesting tactically speaking is inevitably becoming married off by my parents who medically take care everything for me also enable making this movie possible having given some (his father Dan being filmmaker credited co-director) though I’m dying inside be somebody else damnit!

Finding oneself requires lots of pointers along the way thus embarking journey towards self-sufficiency involves seeking advice from individuals who have overcome similar circumstances like ourselves; among them are comedian Maysoon Zayid actor Ali Stoker civil rights activists Bob Williams former Deputy Commissioner Administration Disabilities late Judy Heumann founder Disabled Action which was immortalized Crip Camp.

While the structure of road trip might be trite, what happens during Habib’s travels between interviews could never occur to an able-bodied person let alone cross their mind such as being spoken down at airport gate during small talk (Habib’s dad has tell someone they’re talking 20-year-old not baby) or constantly having trouble getting onto plane every single time. It creates perfect environment for interviews that are just as eye-opening when Samuel is more concerned about the inhibitions which have been fostered by a society ignorant of their harmfulness through segregation. He shares with her the pain of never having gone school with nondisabled peers until high school where she lets on nobody ever asked what wanted do life seriously teachers ask other kids implying there was no real future there.

Though Habib deals with different subjects ranging from education to sex (a personal matter for the co-director, who’s looking for a girlfriend), the movie feels like it’s been stretched slightly past its feature length when there is inevitably some repetition and no clear dramatic arc. However, “The Ride Ahead” becomes formless in the presence of Habib, it works best at its most casual as relaxed conversations give way to watching the filmmaker gain confidence in his talent and discover that two cameras aimed in opposite directions will most effectively reach viewers and the combination of seeing someone learn while simultaneously sharing that knowledge is electric.
