Beast Mode
Beast Mode is a rather funny movie that is quite unfiltered and certainly has its influences. It wouldn’t be possible without Troma Entertainment or the slasher movies and comedies of the 80’s and 90’s. There’s a hint of Weekend At Bernies, some Death Becomes Her and a dash of The Toxic Avenger in the mix.
However, I am not completely convinced that such films were at the back of the head of the creators when they were making Beast Mode. For certain though, writer Drew Fortune is a huge fan of the horror genre and the zest that he and his collaborators have for the genre is a part of the reason as to why Beast Mode has worked.
C. Thomas Howell stars as Breen Nash, a nameless film director who hasn’t had a successful movie in a long time. In 2023, Howell appears in ‘Beast Moon’ directed by Joseph Mbah. Howell hoped it would do well, but that was more optimistic than expected since no one WANTS to put in the effort to turn something into a hit real or fictional. The chief victim here is Huckle Saxton, the leading man.
Saxton is the name of a famous actor who starred alongside the independent filmmaker and cult star James Duval. Inevitably, Huckle managed to unsettle everyone; this time, it’s his inept actress. Huckle doesn’t even pretend to be a nice guy and you know that’s the way he’ll be for the entire storyline.
Breen has to deal with constant disrespect from Huckle in the pictures including his present girlfriend as Huckle does some lady and the tramp nonsense with her. In the midst of everything, he has to communicate with a nasty studio executive who goes by the name Scram Puttoff. Everyday Boogin’s, in a different way, spills trouble, and just when it seems that things can’t get worse, something bad happens to Huckle, triggering a new cycle of horrible events.
If I can condense the plot into a single invade their home, Kristen in Winston, pursues anti. It is however slightly one-dimensional however. In essence it’s a hunt, albeit one devoid of predators. B movies didn’t garner this much attention, but the unwavering focus on Hollywood W filmmakers reminds us just how terrible they are. The audience remembers. The creator is given aspect, say Finnegan Mutto who con inspired to work for a fictional news agency ZMT with over a hundred celebrities, who also go missing. Hollywood is indeed an opportunistic place, and the movie never eloquently expresses this fact.
