Aalakaalam

Jaya Krishnamoorthy displays many talents in this film, as he directs and acts in it too. Because of this, the movie becomes more profound and true. It starts slow but then reveals itself as an anti-alcohol story that has a strong impact on people.

The plot revolves around Jai who is brought up by his mother Yashoda alone after her husband dies from drinking too much. He does well at school and falls in love with Tamizh from a rich family background which differs greatly from his own. However, his disciplined lifestyle comes under threat when Rajesh; a fellow student makes him take alcohol through manipulation thus leading into addiction with attendant consequences following suit.

The movie effectively shows how alcoholism destroys lives not only of those who use it but also their families hence creating awareness about the need for prevention programs. Addictive tendencies are portrayed stepwise by Jaya Krishnamoorthy such that first someone indulges casually before becoming dependent upon substances.

Tamizh acted by Chandini Tamilarasan gives a compelling performance where she struggles to change her partner’s behavior towards drinking while Eshwari Rao’s depiction of Yashoda adds layers to the story because now we see how much pain mothers go through seeing their sons destroy themselves through addictions

Nevertheless, though commendable in its moral teachings, pacing problems coupled with lack of fun parts can leave one feeling drained emotionally maybe even bored for some time during watching it so be prepared. Also, Jaya Krishnamoorthy took time getting comfortable playing Jai which affected credibility at initial stages of the film according to me.

Taking everything into account, if you expect light entertainment out of movies then this may not be your cup of tea but if you are looking for something that will make you think hard about drinking habits then do watch it because there is so much more behind what meets the eye here. The message hits hard especially among people who are into socially-conscious films making it a significant addition to the world of cinema.
