In the movie Kappu Bilupina Naduve, there is a profound investigation into social intricacies and moral uncertainties through the use of bright days contrasting with dark nights. It is not an exaggeration to say that social media has become more than just a means for entertainment or profit; it can also be used as a tool to bring about significant changes in society.
Nevertheless, in today’s world, what social media represents tends to be blurred influencers and YouTubers often walk on the thin line between exploiting these platforms for positive influences and succumbing under fame or ratings. This juxtaposition highlights how necessary it is that social media lives up to its potential as an agent of societal transformation rather than just another instrument for gaining attention or money.
This exploration comes alive in the hands of debutant director Vasanth Vishnu who was formerly an actor himself; he presents us with his take on real-life events wrapped within a contemporary horror thriller package. Will this story manage to navigate through black-and-white divides so as illuminate various shades of human experience? Or does it risk being dismissed as yet another new filmmaker’s effort struggling against countless narrative challenges?
Kappu Bilupina Naduve unfolds at Devaragiri which is a small village in Karnataka engulfed by darkness both metaphorically and physically. During day time the village looks bright and calm but once night falls everything becomes pitch black hence its name ‘Kappu Bilupina Naduve’. The whole film revolves around the haunted main road situated in this place believed to have been cursed by evil spirits thus causing fear among residents.
It is in such an atmosphere filled with terror that a group of brave YouTubers who deal with paranormal investigations find themselves becoming unexpected saviors. Spearheaded by Vishu (played by Vasanth Vishnu) together with his team, they set out on dangerous mission aimed at bringing out truth behind haunting of Devaragiri village.
However, there are numerous challenges which these YouTubers must overcome so as to bring light into Devaragiri’s darkness. In their course of action they get entangled with struggle by an old villager pushing for streetlights installation which is a representation of efforts to face both physical and metaphorical shadows.
As events continue unfolding one cannot help but remember Ashoka’s good horror film 6-5=2 and start hoping for an equally chilling experience like that offered by found footage thrillers. Unfortunately though, director Vasanth Vishnu fails to realize his intentions of maintaining naturalistic approach towards this movie through focus on normal interactions between characters.
The presence of senior actor Sharath Lokithaswa as a cop contributes towards the ending point while Biradar’s role serves as central pivot around which whole plot rotates. Vidyashree, Naveen Raghu and Harish are members in Vishnu’s YouTuber gang. However when initial scary moments give room for predictability then it sends cold statistics thus resulting into story arc centered on desire for revenge by single villager.
Despite these let downs, Vasanth Vishnu has managed to bring out the fine line between being superstitious and skeptical; additionally probing deep into human faiths and strengths. There is something about cinematography especially during night shoots that makes one feel uncomfortable throughout some parts because they could not afford to lose concentration from beginning till end
Kappu Bilupina Naduve is an analysis of the battle between good and bad, which forces us to face our innermost terrors in the dark. It combines horror with a critique on society, making us aware about what it means to be a social media influencer via Sharath Lohithaswara’s person who justifies this position by telling journalists about their duties as influencers on different platforms such as Facebook or Instagram. Yet still nobody knows how much people will be affected by watching this movie.
