It is always a nice surprise when a film looks too campy for its own good and loses my interest. However, I prefer to give all movies a fair chance, and I’m glad I did with Becky. The advertisements made it seem like one of those movies that would have gone straight to digital or DVD back in the day; even though that’s basically what it has done, it deserves more credit than being brushed off as such. Is it going to win any awards? Absolutely not, but if you’re a fan of this genre, it is an absolute blast. If you aren’t into gore and violence, then this one is not for you; but if you are here is why I believe Becky may be the most enjoyable on demand film of 2020 so far.
After her mother’s loss, Becky goes with her dad and his new girlfriend along with her son to their lakehouse. Suddenly intruders come into their home looking for a key appearing oddly calm. Within ten minutes everything goes to hell and now Becky has made it her mission to take them out one by one. This is pretty much if someone who knew how to really make a gore-fest tried to do Home Alone in the woods. The story alone is very by the numbers, but it actually works really well within the context of the rest of the movie.
Lulu Wilson has shown through films like Annabelle: Creation or Netflix’s series The Haunting of Hill House that she is easily one of the best young actresses working today. Her commitment always jumps off screen and this movie was no exception for her. On top of that which was probably the most surprising element to this movie was Kevin James plays the leader of these intruders; seeing him play a villain let alone serious role for once was very solid work from him here where he was great in kind of subtle ways I never thought i’d see him do drama like this before, but now I really want to see him do more of it. If he doesn’t go back to comedy and stays in the drama genre i’m totally okay with that.
Now this may be the area where some viewers will be turned off by this movie, but I think it’s probably the most impressive aspect. As the movie goes on way more gore starts happening and while that is absolutely not for everyone, from a filmmaking standpoint I was blown away at certain points. The practical effects of the gore itself were very well done. There are also a good amount of shocking or cringeworthy (in a good way) moments as well. If you’re up for that and find it to be an enjoyable element if done in a fun or unique way then this movie is probably right up your ally.
In general, the film “Becky” is much better than I expected. It has a few moments of earned drama where it takes itself seriously, but it also knows when to let loose and get a little campy. It’s not really a horror movie so much as it is a revenge story with lots of very well done gore effects and two great central performances that kept me entertained enough to stay on board. It’s not much more than a great B-Movie, but that worked for this one. Directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion have created a fun little thriller here that never lets up from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you’re into those kinds of movies.
