Somewhere in China, Zichou city of the late 1920s or early 1930s. A former policeman now private detective Man Tianfu (Jia Bing) is called to the theatre of Longsheng opera troupe by Tong Huaici (Yu Entai), the boss. He arrives at just before 8pm and finds that five other people had been invited: Bao Zhongshan (Liu Hua), boss of Helu opera troupe; writer/poet Xie Shucheng (Yu Yang), nephew of gangster Hu Daxia (Han Feng); Hu Jiaojiao (Li Qian), daughter of Hu Daxia; Chen Xiaowu (Niu Xinxin), a long-haired martial artist who works for gangster Jin (Huangfu Boyuan); and Tong Huaici’s maid, Yang Yu’er (Feng Xinyao), who serves them all tea.
The last person to arrive is Long (Xu Zhe), the leader of Green Dragon gang which, with Hu Daxia, controls Zichou city. Eventually, Tong Huaicai shows up, along with his leading singer Yun Siyue (Jiang Mengjie). The two said everyone was being held hostage in the theatre by Fengzi (“Madman”), who suddenly appears wearing an opera mask and with a team of gunmen.
Having revealed himself as the one responsible for murdering 18 people in what became known as Scorpion League gang massacre, fengzi gives Man Tianfei until midnight to solve the murder a week ago at a party in Tong huaici’s mansion of well-known actress Mo Lianyi(Feng Keying,Ye Zi), who happened to be his favorite opera singer too.
He also tells him that among those present here tonight stands her killer; if he fails then all will die. Long objects and in a shootout between his men and fengzi’s, long dies from being shot dead by someone else’s bullet. So now Man Tianfu has less than four hours left with seven suspects sitting around one table.
Having already known the details, Man Tianfu explains that on the night Mo Lianyi was shot there were 57 people in total at Tong’s mansion. The party was to celebrate several people including the city’s favorite Beijing Opera actress Mo Lianyi moving from Helu troupe to Longsheng, in a deal worked out with Bao Zhongshan. (Just after 7pm Mo Lianyi had come down stairs and said how happy she was to be joining Longsheng before wandering off into the garden; but then Longsheng’s top singer Yun Siyue had appeared and made catty remarks about being downgraded because of Mo Lianyi joining the troupe.
Tong Huaici took her into a side room to calm down and then announced to everyone that the banquet would start at 7.30pm. He had asked Chen Xiaowu to go collect Mo lianyi from garden; but just after he called out for her to come inside she got shot in back at 7:26pm . Just before that Xie Shucheng found a pastry wrapping in his pocket which Mo Lianyi had written in her hand saying that her life is in danger ;he showed it to Chen Xiaowu.) By 11:35pm man tianfei still hasn’t gotten any closer to identifying murderer. He eventually gets around asking questions of Tong huaici’s shy maid Yang Yu’er.Then suddenly at one minute till midnight , a familiar face appears out of nowhere and tells Fengzi take off your mask!
