A youthful solid young lady who marries a very regressive town and battles the rite of passage virginity test (kori pratha). Will she succeed in eradicating this menace and bring justice & respect for women?
The film is set in Lakshmangadh, Uttar Pradesh and is inspired by true events that took place. Here, women were subjected to all sorts of injustice by Thakur Ramdev Singh (Raj Babbar), the sexist ‘pradhan’ and Kori Pratha (virginity test) which was widely practiced among them. According to the chief, these backward practices act as shields for his community against epidemics or any other form of calamity; thus even if one dies after taking agnipariksha like this newlywed girl did out of despair because she couldn’t pass it.
Laad’ Laddu’ Singh (Akshay Oberoi), son to pradhan gets married with Sabhyata (Khanak Budhiraja), a strong-willed woman who does not only protest against the above mentioned vice but also continues working as bus driver. This leads to their separation since they deeply loved each other but hatred for such acts could not allow them stay under one roof anymore. Will she be able to save her husband from these traditions while setting others free too?
It’s a linear narrative written by Nishant Bhardwaj along with Arvind Chaudhary and Gayatri Manish that follows logical progression but fails when it comes to storytelling therefore making it less interesting or captivating. However Chimnay P Purohit does well on character development through his direction besides conveying food for thought messages throughout the movie. Sabhyata takes up job of being bus conductor being aware of its male dominated nature even though she has graduated already while Laddu enters like cool dude riding motorcycle only for camera angle reveal him sitting at backseat of tractor because he’s happier there while woman drives. It may sound strange but the way it is done doesn’t look forced at all.
The movie does not depict the villagers as bad people or devils (even the pradhan) but as individuals frozen in time, following age-old customs without questioning them. Akshay Oberoi is a likable actor who plays Laddu well either as a directionless youth or someone who later finds his voice and strength. Khanak Budhiraja gives an average performance and can be mistaken for a strong young lady. Poonam Dhillon and Raj Babbar are actors with experience; they also perform exceptionally.
This film has a strong message that virginity should not determine a woman’s ‘purity’ or respectability and addresses key issues on hymen breaking. However, it becomes too idealistic towards the end. Ek Kori Prem Katha is well-intentioned but lacks impact and narrative punch.
