The previous movie, Needle Park Baby was a success. Pierre Monnard has directed the movie Wilder and Off Season as well as collaborated on others such as Neumatt. His most recent work Bisons premiered at the Solothurn Film Festival where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film. It also had an international premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam in their Harbour section. The film talks about us humans having empathy for one another even when things are tough in our increasingly hostile world. In this film, Pierre tells an amazing story that is both heart-warming and painful to watch because of how well Maxime Valvini and Karim Barras act together; they really bring out something special between them on screen. However, what makes Bisons unique among other films set outside Switzerland is its peripheral vision of the country which shows characters who are anything but picture postcard Swiss Tourism Board representatives: fragile people fighting against all odds to survive in different corners of Switzerland.
This is Steve Chappuis’ life: working hard on his family’s farm with his mother Mathilde who also happens to be managing it; training for Swiss wrestling a national sport he loves so much because it helps him let off steam when things get too frustrating for words (which they often do). Surrounded by mountains that protect this remote place from everything else around, Steve dreams big about becoming Federal Wrestling Champion someday an honorific title never won by anyone from here before maybe ever.
But nothing’s easy or simple in life; certainly not for someone like Steve who has known only struggle since birth and fought tooth and nail every inch on this painful journey towards adulthood thus far. It should come as no surprise then that things aren’t looking up right now either despite all efforts made thus far: he himself knows best what wrestling means to him alone What more can I say?
Money flows into their pockets faster than water; they’re sinking deeper into debt which keeps piling higher with each passing day since his father died. This means there’s no future left for their business unless something changes soon but wrestling remains Steve’s only hope so he ignores reality around them while everything falls apart under momma Mathilde’s watchful eye thinking she’ll handle it somehow without telling him about anything anyway until later maybe when things will improve magically overnight or not And then Steve’s eyes get opened unexpectedly by Joel who brings another approach altogether on how they could save themselves from eternal damnation within that hellish vortex trapping them unaware.
The idea is simple: go fight people illegally across France until enough money gathers up to pay off all debts tying down our lives here at the farm. Extreme as it may sound considering what condition our relationship is currently in after being weakened further through such measures taken before now this becomes just another test of strength between two brothers torn apart already by too many forces pulling them away from one another. But when push comes to shove, there really isn’t any other option left except following along behind brother Joel into some kind human adventure full surprising violence affection and vice versa…
And then like an animal wounded refusing death but instead fighting back against others equally abandoned outcasts living on society fringes where only strongest survive because weakness has no place among cruel laws ruling over jungles covered in snows Jura-Nord region which chills down marrow itself cutting through every bone skin like knife blade reminding us always that nature can be friendly enemy too
Bisons tells the story of a society where love and empathy are illegal. It is an exhausted society in crisis, barely able to move forward at all. Bisons is also about two brothers struggling to stay alive in a world that wants them dead. Their relationship with each other, though unspoken, serves as a symbol for our own world which has lost its direction; the only weapons left being kindness and care against anarchy itself if necessary so as not let mankind perish away.
