Celebrating two decades of innovation in art, music and culture, a self titled documentary Art, Beats+Lyrics (AB+L) commemorates its 20th anniversary. AB+L started in Atlanta in 2004 as a traveling art and music showcase. The documentary was created in collaboration with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, Cult Creative, Vox Creative and Spark Foundry. It has been captivating audiences across the country ever since its inception, giving a voice to both emerging and established visual and musical artists by creating an atmosphere that nurtures creative expression.
Directed by independent filmmaker Bill Horace, this film offers insight into AB+L’s commitment towards cultural diversity through artistic innovation over the past twenty years while also showcasing how transformative power resides within our communities through various forms such as art or music.
“Art Beats” says founder Jabari Graham on why he created such event “ was because we wanted to provide a platform where diverse artists can display their works like never before seen.” Two decades down line it still amazes him how much impact his idea has had on hip hop community let alone visual arts world at large.
The documentary takes viewers deep into what makes up the vibrant worlds of A.B.L., capturing visually stunning frames that embody all aspects of creativity itself. Through founder Graham’s eyes along with Curator Dwayne “Dubelyoo” Wright; we see where this showcase came from so-to-speak while following artists like Sydney James and Lisette Correa aka Arrrtaddict as they prepare for its 20th Anniversary Tour which also features commentary from previous exhibitors including Grammy Award winner Killer Mike among others.
“This is one those rare films where everyone involved knew exactly what they wanted to achieve overall but were not quite sure how best tell their individual parts” said AJ Gutierrez who serves as executive creative director for Vox Creative.“ Art Community Opportunity those three words make up ArtBeat plus Lyrics’ DNA so naturally our goal as creative partners was bring them together into something that can be felt all the way through its twenty year history.”
The tour kicked off in Miami and made stops in Las Vegas during the Big Game weekend with additional shows scheduled for Indianapolis and Houston. A.B.L. will have a special weekend of events in Atlanta, which will include a private screening of the documentary followed by an after party at a secret location.Along with their signature event, cities on this tour include Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, New Orleans and Seattle.
“Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey and Jack Daniel’s have been proud partners of AB+L for most of its 20 years because it embodies our brands’ core values while pushing us to innovate,” said Keenan Harris who is brand director for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey. “Working closely with Cult Creative each year helps breathe life into these tours so we’re really excited about how we’ll celebrate this 20th anniversary.”
