Drew Friedman: Vermeer of the Borscht Belt

Drew-Friedman:-Vermeer-of-the-Borscht-Belt

For many years, artist Drew Friedman has been recording a weird, alternate universe peopled by the likes of forgotten Hollywood stars, old Jewish comedians and liver-spotted elevator operators.

Vermeer of the Borscht Belt is an exhaustive documentary tracing Friedman’s evolution from underground comics to frequenting the cover of The New Yorker.

Friedman may have grown up in the New York literary scene his father is writer Bruce Jay Friedman but he was more comfortable with The Three Stooges, Car 54 and MAD magazine. Vermeer of the Borscht Belt follows fifty years of American popular culture as seen through the eyes of Drew Friedman.

We will talk to some of Friedman’s friends and colleagues about his influences and inspirations. We will see him turn a rough sketch into a full color painting.

And we’ll take you on a behind the scenes tour of Friedman’s private “Jewseum” quite possibly the world’s largest collection of items devoted exclusively to Jewish comedians.

But we can’t do it without your help. Our Kickstarter campaign has something for everyone from DVDs and limited-edition posters to executive producer credits.

More Heroes of the Comics is Drew Friedman’s latest book a sequel to his critically acclaimed Heroes of the Comics. This time, instead of just one hundred portrait paintings depicting early pioneers in comic-book publishing, this book includes publishers, editors and artists painted as colorfully as they deserve! All ages are represented here: men and women who were kids when they got into comics themselves, as well those born after their heyday but still inspired by their work.
