Jessica Mauboy, who played in “The Sapphires” – Australia’s breakout movie of 2013 – takes her first film lead in more than a decade in family feature “Windcatcher.”
The Stan Original film bows on the Australian streamer on March 28 and is directed by Tanith Glynn-Maloney from a screenplay by Boyd Quakawoot.
Set in a small country town, “Windcatcher” follows the unlikely friendship between Percy Boy, newcomer Keithy Cobb and the feisty Daisy Hawkins as they join forces to wrestle the local school sports day title from a gang of grade five bullies. But as Percy Boy trains with his mates he realizes that he has the supernatural ability to see lost souls a gift passed down from his grandfather. Percy Boy must face his fears, prove his resilience and become a force to be reckoned with.
Mauboy is an Australian showbiz icon but has mainly been seen in music and TV roles — “Australian Idol,” “The Voice” and “The Project” over the past decade. In ”Windcatcher,” she plays Aunty Cressida, while Lisa Maza (“Wentworth”) features as Aunty Prue and newcomer Lennox Monaghan stars as Percy Boy.
“Windcatcher” represents Stan’s first co-commission with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF). It was developed with support from Screen Queensland through the Queensland Government. Major production investment comes from Screen Australia, ACTF, The Post Lounge, Stan; it is made in association with VicScreen.
“Windcatcher” is produced by Meg O’Connell (Upright S2, Retrograde) for Unless Pictures and Drew Grove (Stan Original Films A Sunburnt Christmas and Christmas Ransom) for Every Cloud Productions (an Eternus Group company). It is executive produced by Bernadette O’Mahony for ACTF, and Cailah Scobie, Donna Chang and Rachel Okine for Stan. Worldwide distribution will be handled by ACTF.
