To amuse myself, I chose to watch a horror film known as “Hantu Polong”. But sadly, was it far from entertaining. The title alone made me nervous from the beginning. Still, I decided to give it a try.
When I heard that “Hantu Polong” was based on a story in Penyengat Island, Riau Islands, I thought the concept had potential. This could be an interesting way of incorporating Indonesian cultural background into a scary movie which would help bring local myths and legends alive through film making. Moreover, mixing up cultural elements with the horror genre might create more immersive experiences for viewers like me.
That potential however is not realized in “Hantu Polong”. This film does not convince me that inserting a science theme into the human body so as to achieve supernatural powers or wealth let alone eternal youth is possible though it tries too hard otherwise setting itself up for failure because its implementation lacks depth and sounds fake.
The cast’s acting does not save this movie either. They are just bad in every sense of the word; forced performances that fail even at being naturalistic. Their characters do not connect with me because they seem emotionally detached or something along those lines.
I hardly care what happens next and watching Hantu Polong feels like a chore now. Every minute drags on forever since there’s nothing interesting enough happening here to hold my attention span captive. Somehow, this film seems like it has time travelled back to the 2000s quality wise doesn’t make sense but whatever.
Technically speaking, there’s nothing much worth shouting about in this movie either. The cinematography isn’t anything special, the direction couldn’t be any worse either while visual effects were clearly done by amateurs at best if not outrightly unprofessional-looking against the backdrop of other weak areas such as badly coordinated parts altogether making one thing clear -“Hantu Polong” really let down as scary movie hoped for by viewers like me.
This is subjective and each person’s experience may differ from another’s view. So please do not get emotional instead let this serve as a drive to improve in future endeavors. Always support local films. With all its flaws though, I will give it a 1/10 rating since am the one who paid money to watch it. Are you curious? Give it a try then
