ESPN Deportes announced today a documentary called “Las Amazonas de Yaxunah” that tells the story of a Mayan women’s softball team from the Yucatán region of Mexico who have an extraordinary spirit and determination. They were motivated to create this film after seeing how hard these women work and play for what they believe in even if it means breaking down barriers or facing challenges head on. The movie follows their journey from being just another group of players into becoming champions both on and off the field.
Narrated by Yalitza Aparicio, who became the first Indigenous Mexican Actress ever nominated for an Oscar in 2019, Las Amazonas de Yaxunah takes place in small town called Yaxunah where supplies are limited but dreams are limitless. It was there that one woman refused to let society tell her who she should be which ignited a flame within others around her, leading them all together as teammates with a common goal. winning games while changing lives along way. Their story is full of highs lows; from getting viral videos noticed because nobody had seen anything like before, receiving invitations play exhibition matches or tournaments anywhere throughout Mexico even if meant traveling hours upon hours just so people could see what they were made out of, battling through discrimination while finally gaining respect not only fans but also other teams, finding love themselves during process falling more love game itself every single day.
