There was a brief time in my life where people couldn’t seem to shut up about Anyone But You, and that was just when it came out. I don’t know if they put up billboards everywhere or if we were all obsessed with the lead actors or if we just needed something that reminded us of 2000s romcoms. Either way, I didn’t want to see this movie. I only went because I go to the movies with my sister every Sunday, and she wanted to see it. She’s more into these kinds of films.
So we went and saw it. Would I have seen it otherwise? No. It would’ve been one of those things where if it landed on streaming I might watch it when I’m bored
But I saw it, so here’s my review!
After getting stuck together during a disastrous night out, two enemies find themselves stuck together at an Australian wedding for their own siblings.
We open on Bea, a Boston University law student who desperately has to pee. She goes into a coffee shop, but the person working is rude and tells her she has to buy something if she wants to use the bathroom; there’s actually quite a line anyway though, so when Goldman Sachs employee Ben sees her struggling outside he pretends she’s his wife.
He buys her a coffee and waits with her as she struggles in the bathroom; they strike up conversation when she comes out and spend the day together, eventually falling asleep on her couch. But when she wakes up in the morning, she leaves him there halfway down the street though, she turns around and catches him insulting her to his friend behind his back. He’s mad she left.
They don’t cross paths again until six months later; turns out Bea’s sister Halle is marrying Ben’s friend Claudia’s sister Claudia (yes). They start going at each other right away this time around, but they’re going to be seeing a lot more of each other: Claudia and Halle decide they want to get married in Sydney.
During this time, Bea has been having kind of a tough go. She dropped out of law school and didn’t tell her parents, and broke up with her fiancé. She gets on her plane to Australia…and Ben’s sitting right next to her. When they land, she realizes they’re staying in the same house together much to everyone else’s dismay, as they keep fighting.
Things get even more complicated when Ben’s free spirited ex keeps making moves on him which, of course, starts making Bea feel some things too.
Then Bea’s parents invite her ex-fiancé. Halle and Claudia finally get sick of all the fighting (it took them long enough), and so they get other members of the family involved to try and push the two together but it’s very obvious what they’re doing, and so it backfires pretty quickly.
That leads Bea and Ben to pretend that they’re dating in order to trick everyone else into leaving them alone. But somewhere along the way maybe on a boat? or at karaoke? they actually start enjoying each other’s company (gross) and then when on a boat (I think?), they recreate that scene from Titanic where he holds her at the edge of the boat but then she falls out and then he jumps in after her.
They talk a lot in the water and she tells him she dropped out of school. They sleep together. Bea says everything has been a mistake lately, which really upsets Ben. He leaves her there that morning, and it breaks her heart.
They have to go pick up the cake in the morning. The ex asks if Bea is okay with them getting back together, and she says yes. Ben ends up spilling to his best friend that Bea dropped out of law school, then in dramatic fashion drops the cake and everyone finds out she’s not in law school.
Halle and Claudia have a huge fight about them and question why they’re even getting married. Ben hears this and tells Bea they just need to pretend they’re chill until after the wedding when he can break up with her properly or whatever, which works until Bea sees Margaret kissing Ben’s face off.
She runs away from the ceremony because she’s devastated by this. Ben tells Margaret no but learns that Bea is mad so he jumps off a cliff for helicopters to rescue him from ocean or whatever idk where I am anymore, but yeah then he tells them to fly him to Sydney Opera House where he knows Bea will be.
He apologizes to Bea in front of Opera House steps, they make up obviously duh then they go back to wedding where Halle & Claudia confess their fight was fake so everyone could see how much they loved each other all along like barf on my life forever then Margaret gets w/Bea’s ex fiancé whatever who cares.
Overall Thoughts
I mean I thought it was very 2000s romcom vibes lol like you said dumb but fun ya know? Not my favorite ever but not something i would throw into a fire either -it definitely knew what it was trying to do- pass the time I guess?
Someone else might love this movie though tbh it fits right into those aesthetics/tropes that people love these days especially tiktok literature I’m just not that person..
