Hot Spot Movie Review

Vignesh Karthick’s Hot Spot is another hyperlink film in Tamil cinema. Four separate narratives weave through the film, and how all four of them come together is quite interesting too. Basically, there is this filmmaker (played by Vignesh Karthick himself) who narrates a story to a producer that he wants to make into a film.

So, the meta-ness of it all is quite fascinating really. There are many things that Hot Spot aims at starting conversation about, things that are considered ‘taboo’ in society, and the film does achieve that. However, I would have to say that one point in particular where the film decides to be clickbaity if I may use that word about something just for shock value and anticipation build-up from its audience.

Most of these moments do work well within the first three narratives except for one. The last narrative features Kalaiyarasan and Sofia as couple who make their two kids participate in a reality show. This emotional story among four as said by film maker himself before Fame Game storyline with producer.

Finding balance between sending across message and doing it in funny way is not easy job at all. The first three stories Happy Married Life, Golden Rules, Thakkali Chutney have done this perfectly well while Fame Game deals with matter seriousness cannot be lightened up even slightly so this also becomes where movie loses track.

Even till then though three had preachiness to them still looked like comedy was being employed heavily for narration but now with no counteracting forces available those elements take over whole thing.

The first story Happy Married Life has 96 pair Gouri G Kishan and Adithya Bhaskar, the second story Golden Rules has Sandy and Ammu Abhirami. Both of these stories are about couples who want to get married to each other. Even though they may sound similar in terms of tone, their execution is completely different from one another what remains constant between both narratives being that music is seamlessly integrated into storyline.

Also there’s a dream sequence in one of them which goes on for too long but every second it takes is worth wondering if film is set parallel universe or not because even though that isn’t true these parts will make think while laugh.

The third story Thakkali Chutney has Janani Iyer as Anitha and Subash as Vetri. There’s literally nothing going for him in life despite being named so. This takes deeper look into love, lust and gender dynamics between men and women etcetera; also its tone fits well within overall narrative they’re trying to convey through movie.

All said done Hot Spot features three stories that are funny thought-provoking and a fourth one that’s horrifyingly disturbing.
