The Yes Men (2003)
The thinking man’s comedy, The Yes Men is a brainy offshoot of MTV’s Punk’d that’s hatched from the team behind the shrewd American Movie. Using guerilla-style filmmaking tactics, directors Chris Smith, Dan Ollman, and Sarah Price use their subversive documentary to follow the acts of two merry political pranksters attending global conferences and posing as representatives from the World Trade Organization.
Where we see spam mail, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonnano see potential. In the late ’90s, the tech savvy activists launched a satirical website that mirrored George W. Bush’s official site. One good prank earned them the right to pull another, and the team was asked to dress up www.gatt.org, which was made to look like the WTO’s actual site. Surprisingly, Bichlbaum and Bonnano started receiving e-mail invitations from oblivious groups to speak at assorted conventions.
Posing as members of the WTO, Bichlbaum and Bonnano take things to the limit with sad but hilarious results. They start small, pitching a lewd leisure suit to textile executives. With their confidence levels on the rise, they suggest to college students that Third World nations could prevent starvation by eating recycled human waste. As the capper, they blatantly lie to a room of Australian journalists by saying the WTO is closing its doors.
The pranks come with a purpose, as the Yes Men actually have something intelligent to say to the small audiences they’re afforded. They push the envelope to provoke a response, and are shocked when their targets take them seriously. The college students, thankfully, voice their disgust at the idea of waste burgers and flee the demonstration in protest, yet the grizzled conventioneers swallow the Men’s obscene notions without raising a finger in debate. Apparently most people lose the urge to fight for justice somewhere between the frat house and the corporate cubicle.
