REVIEW
Road To Perdition is the story of a father living two secret lives. To some he feared and hated, he’s the enforcer for one of the largest mafia bosses in town. But to a mother and two children he is loved as a father. One day, one of the boys becomes curious as to what his father really does for a living, and sneaks into his car.
He witnesses a dreadful execution, but what’s even worse is that he is spotted. The mob doesn’t survive allowing witnesses to live, and possibly open their mouths. But instead of killing Michael, his mother and brother are killed accidentally. From there Michael and his father embark on a long journey to hunt down the man that killed their family and to take down anyone who gets in their way.
To tell you the truth, this is a gangster movie Its more the story of a father and son who truly begin to bond and understand each other when times are extremely tough. Yes, there are a lot of guns And yes, a lot of people get shot (and they don’t spare us any details). But the story is a story of a father and son, the mafia provides the setting and the circumstances.
This movie was made beautifully! I won’t pretend to know much about cinematography, but this was the nicest filmed movie I’ve seen in a while! The plot for the most part didn’t slow down, and kept the audiences attention. The dialogue kept us listening. And the acting blew us off our feet.
It goes without saying that Tom Hanks gave a wonderful performance. Hanks could give life to any movie. He not only gave Road To Perdition life, he gave it form, he gave it love, and he gave it greatness. Paul Newman and Jude Law were also splendid. But I was most impressed and surprised by Tyler Hoechlin who played Michael, Hank’s son. This was his first movie, and as I’ve heard him point out in a television interview it was a pretty good movie to start out in! Most child actors and actresses drive me nuts.
Their voices send chills down my spine and their acting makes me think I should be in Hollywood (I shouldn’t). There are maybe a handful of children who can portray a serious character. I’m not talking about funny little children who belong on Nickelodeon’s version of SNL. I’m talking about kids who can perform while in Oscar (or should be Oscar Joester) caliber movies. For someone who’s never been in a movie before, he made quite an impression!
Its sure not to be looked over come awards season. Its a masterpiece visually, artistically, and and to any serious moviegoer willing to give up six bucks and of couple hours! Its a powerful experience for anyone who takes the time to see it and its sure to be enjoyed. Aside from being slow for a small piece of the movie, I can offer no more negative comments. GO SEE IT!
