Aenigma Pictures, a production company, has released its latest horror film Kuyang: The Devil’s Ally Who Always Monitors. Since the 7th of March, Indonesian cinemas have been showing the movie which features Putri Ayudya and Dimas Aditya.
Basically, this film is about Bimo (Dimas Aditya) and Sriatun (Alyssa Abidin). A young couple who were forced to leave their hometown for Muara Tapah Village after an incident. This place is very far from their city, they have to go through a long journey.”
But since they arrived in that village, Sri started feeling terror that she never felt before. Fear grew inside her because as a migrant she did not know anything about scary myths in the area.
With time going by, the terror reached its peak when Mina Uwe (Putri Ayudya) examined Sri who was already pregnant. Ever since then kuyang which is original creature from thereabouts started haunting Muara Tapah village.
This film tells how slowly but surely storyline had been built from beginning till end, it was narrated step by step without complicating things aka audience friendly storytelling method. When watching this movie you are made ‘chain’ but no need to think what conflict will be built so that’s why people don’t feel like they watched two hours length feature films at all.
From start till finish there was always tense atmosphere throughout whole movie and never let go until it ended, scary environment had been maintained consistently during whole duration of picture hence making watchers feel like they didn’t get break throughout entire screening period.
The extra value of this Kuyang film lies on cultural background used being different from common horror movies. Most of them take place in one areas located at Java Island while setting for current flick is at Kalimantan instead.
Thus audience will acquire newer understanding or feelings about Borneo’s culture/mythology presented with such unique specifics as coffins that move themselves, kuyang originating from humans practicing witchcraft until use of local dialects which are still intelligible to them.
In term players, there is no doubt about Dimas Aditya and Alyssa Abidin being main characters because they performed well together as new faces. This couple were so convincing their roles as people who do not know anything about new cultures in village communities.
However Putri Ayudya may not be among lead actors but her acting skills were greatly displayed here where she acted like never before in any other previous scary flicks, those personalities with laid back attitude can easily win over hearts of others thereby making audience believe that good ones can sometimes act foolishly especially when dealing with bad guys who appear nice too.
Finally visually this picture was also smooth without forced CGIs hence showing to spectators how usually described Kuyang looks like could have been a revelation for some. That might turn out to be something new for them.
