Bad Company is about an undercover CIA operative, working on a deal to purchase a nuclear bomb from the black market, who ends up being killed before he completes his assignment. Because of the high importance of the mission, the CIA will do anything to find a replacement. But the dealer only wants to talk to him. Luckily, he has a twin brother (who scalps tickets and DJs at small clubs in New York) not exactly CIA material, but they have 9 days to turn him into his brother, and millions of lives just may rest in his hands!
Wow… what a combination, Chris Rock and Sir Anthony Hopkins, I don’t think Hollywood could surprise us any more! For those of you who refuse to see this movie simply because it stars Chris Rock (and I know there are a few of you) its still Chris Rock, but he toned down a bit for this movie. Less racial slurs, a little less comedy, and some serious acting that we haven’t seen from him before. The worst thing a director can do in a Chris Rock movie, is limit him! The best Chris Rock, is a Chris Rock who can act, but still is free to be as funny and as he is.
This is my third CIA movie in a short period of time, and this one was certainly different from either of those. Probably none of it is realistic, most of its probably complete fiction. But it was entertaining, funny as any movie with Chris Rock, and had a plot that kept me into it.
Think of this movie, as a funny and more clichéd version of The Sum of All Fears. I’m not going to give up the ending, but I bet you can guess. Most movie endings turn out similarly and I complain about that. But after seeing three CIA movies in a short period of time, I now enjoy a happy-light-hearted ending!
We’re going to have to start treasuring movies like Bad Company and The Sum of All Fears because they were all made before 9-11. There won’t be many if any nuclear war action movies coming out in the near future. Maybe that isn’t a bad thing, but movies like this one aren’t really a harm. The nuclear war part was barely discussed, and the motive for blowing up New Jersey wasn’t touched at all.
The only reason a nuclear bomb had to be the subject at all in this movie (And at times it really wasn’t relevant at all!) was because Chris Rock’s character obviously wouldn’t have risked so much if the stakes weren’t so high. Movies like this, where the main objection isn’t relevant to the plot, don’t bother me. I would have liked not to talk at all about nuclear war in this review, but after getting past how good the movie was, I don’t know how much I’d have to say!
