Rampage

After three years since San Andreas, Brad Peyton finds himself directing Dwayne Johnson in a spectacular new action film. Inspired by the video game Rampage by Midway Games, Ryan Engle and Carlton Cuse have written a very dynamic script, that sees at the center of the film an albino gorilla named Rampage, the victim of a genetic accident. His destructive fury, however, has nothing to do with his true character, and, above all, with the affection, he has for Davis Okoye, the primatologist who saved him from his first year of life. Besides him, other animals have also undergone the same treatment, and together they risk destroying the city of Chicago.

The protagonist Dwayne Johnson has stated that he would be exiting production if the producers had not changed the ending, which initially did not foresee a happy ending. Alongside him, Oscar nominee Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Joe Manganiello, and Jack Quaid. Audiences enjoyed the film, and critics were divided on it.

Suicide Squad

The now-cult film written and directed by David Ayer lands on Netflix. Inspired by the eponymous group of DC Comics comic book antagonists, the film tells the story of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Slipknot. These supervillains were hired by Special Forces Colonel Rick Flag after Superman’s death, as protection from semi-humans and semi-mutants ready to threaten national security. Despite being bound by Flag’s orders, on pain of death, everyone will find a way to resolve their personal issues, not without some obstacles.

The very rich cast features the big names of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Ben Affleck, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne. The soundtrack is the work of Steven Price and contains the song Heathens by Twenty One Pilots. Despite the generally negative criticism of the critics, the film managed to collect staggering figures at the box office and win the Academy Award for best makeup, thanks to Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson.

Django Unchained

The ninth film was written and directed by maestro Quentin Tarantino and pays homage to the 1966 Django film by the very Italian Sergio Corbucci. Despite the clear quotation, the American director’s feature film differs from the original in style and form, as well as in the dialogue, which is clearly in a Tarantino style. A former dentist, Dr. King Schultz, frees a slave, Django Freeman, to help him find two outlaws he wants to capture to get their bounty. Their journey through the wastelands will lead them to meet and make friends, in spite of the racial stereotypes of the late nineteenth century.

The resounding success of the film is the result of many factors, including cast, soundtrack, and photography, not to mention the impeccable direction. The partnership between the American director and Christoph Waltz continues, earning another Academy Award for the German actor. He was joined by another Oscar winner, Jamie Foxx, in addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Franco Nero, also present in the original Django. Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and nominations for film, photography, and sound editing. The soundtrack was composed by Ennio Morricone, in which the track Ancora Qui sung by Elisa is present.

Athena

After the death of his younger brother in an alleged confrontation with the police, Abdel is called home from the front line and finds his devastated family. Trapped between his younger brother Karim’s desire for revenge and his older brother Moktar’s criminal affairs, he struggles to calm the escalating tensions. But when the situation deteriorates, Athena, their community, turns into a fortress under siege, thus becoming the scene of a tragedy for the family and beyond.

This is the official synopsis of Athena, presented in competition at Venice 79. Romain Gavras directs a fast-paced action film with an epic trend. The initial part is pressing and engaging, with the opposing sides—police and citizens of the Athena community—presenting fluid and technically flawless sequence plans. Films to see on Netflix without a shadow of a doubt, which partially lacks the front of the deepening of the characters, without however the general success being compromised.
