Movie review
“Red” was a career as an officer, “Black” as a priest. Both of these paths were opened to the hero of the novel “The Red and the Black” through the patronage of women. The blacksmith’s son Julien Sorel wants to get to the top of society and becomes faced with a choice: remain a romantic, honest, but poor man and live his whole life without glory, or adapt, use others to make a career at the cost of a ruined soul. Throughout the film, made from the novel in 1997, the life story of the hero is told and the spirit of nineteenth-century French society is successfully conveyed.
