“Road House“, a remake of the movie “Road House (1989 film)“, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, will have its world premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin. However, its creator, director Doug Liman, will not be present at the premiere. This is his form of protest.
Doug Liman vs. Amazon. What is it about?
Doug Liman decided to go to open war with Amazon. The reason is the company’s decision to release the film “Road House” not to cinemas , but directly to the Prime Video platform. Liman does not agree with this decision and claims that he was deceived.
In his column for Deadline, he reveals that he has agreed to direct “Road House” for MGM. This studio was later acquired by Amazon. At first, Liman wasn’t worried about it. Amazon proudly announced that it would release 12 films a year to cinemas through MGM. In his text, the director recalls the company’s declarations.
Now an embittered Liman claims that Amazon lied that they do not care about cinemas at all. He claims that Road House may be his best film and that Jake Gyllenhaal gives the performance of a lifetime. Despite this, Amazon was not persuaded to release the film in cinemas.
Liman originally intended to suffer in silence. Now, however, he has changed his mind and decided to protest not only in his defense, but also in defense of other filmmakers who were defrauded by Amazon. As a sign of protest, he intends, although with great regret, to boycott the world premiere of “Road House“, which will take place in March at the opening of the SXSW festival.
