Review
The movie ‘Shinda Shinda No Papa’ effectively portrays the dynamics between fathers and sons against family life as well as cultural transitions. It is a powerful storytelling choice to use an Indian journey for exploring traditional values against Canadian life settings.
The main idea of this story revolves around Gopi (Gippy Grewal), who wants to teach discipline into his son Shinda (Shinda Grewal) hence they go back home in India where some certain cultural values can be instilled too. “Father hitting a son or scolding him is normal and for the betterment of the child” touches on parenting and generational differences which are very interesting aspects from my point of view according to what `I’ve seen so far.
This 135-minute film was written by Naresh Kathooria, directed by Amarpreet GS Chhabra and it does justice by bringing newness into it while still keeping things real through events that could happen anywhere with any family thus making them relatable even if sometimes scripts may lose focus along the way, I always appreciate such attempts because they show at least someone is trying their best somewhere although towards its end this movie becomes unnecessarily long.
The performances were greats especially considering that both actors are related off screen too, thus making moments shared between them more heartfelt than ever before something else worth noting here being how much effort must have been put as an actor growing up together within same household since little years till now where one gets chance play role opposite other person who knew everything about oneself even before becoming professional artist like himself; another thing worth mentioning would be Jelly played by Gurteg Singh whom i believe did excellent job playing cousin character alongside Shinda since they both delivered best one liners and dialogues throughout flick while managing maintain innocence levels required from such roles where children should act innocent but Prince Kanwaljit Singh as Jelly’s father still managed bring some funniness into narrative too which made things interesting for me at least.
Hina Khan’s entry in Punjabi cinema marks her debut appearance on big screens of this industry thus giving more variety among cast members associated with this film making it even more appealing though I feel there could have been better balance between focusing too much around father son relationship compared to what was given about Hina’s character within storyline itself.
Songs might not stick out apart from title track and ‘disco’ song playing during credits scene but background score does well by blending nicely with movie.
‘Shinda Shinda No Papa’ is a breath of fresh air for Punjabi cinema that adds value through its unique approach in presenting family dynamics against everyday struggle situations. It has ability to make you laugh then cry hence becoming relatable across broad spectrum viewership while teaching us great lessons about accepting each other`s flaws as well communicating effectively among ourselves as members within family units.
