Martin Scorsese on Leonardo DiCaprio: “He is one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema”

During last year’s National Board of Review gala, “Time of the Blood Moon” won, among others: awards for the best film and director. While accepting the award, Martin Scorsese thanked Leonardo DiCaprio for their years of working together.

In many ways, The Time of the Blood Moon is the highlight of our work together. Until the final scene, when [DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart] takes the witness stand. I knew I could just keep the camera on him and not make any cuts because it would convey everything that was happening in that crucial moment. We shot it in one take, I was very moved , he said.

In his speech, Scorsese recalled one of the scenes from the film. In his opinion, this is where the actor best showed his artistry.

One take and I saw him delving into the depths of the human experience that many of us are not even aware of – the weaknesses and delusions of the guy in the movie. You hate him, but at the same time you tend to love such heroes… with all the contradictions of being human. I truly believe that [DiCaprio] is one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema. I thank him for everything , he said.
