The animal rights campaigner Joey Carbstrong, who was born in Australia, has made his first full-length documentary called Pignorant. It’s about the use of gas chambers to kill pigs in the UK and how they are kept before being sent to slaughterhouses.

Produced by Askew Pictures and directed by Carbstrong himself, the film follows how he and undercover animal rights investigator Dan Sheppard managed to secretly film pigs dying inside a gas chamber at a Manchester slaughterhouse in the North of England. We also see Carbstrong looking into a factory farm keeping pigs in North Yorkshire, as well as a so-called free-range pig farm in East Anglia. The suffering and cruelty recorded may be one of most shocking parts of this documentary after CO2 being used for killing pigs in UK, US, Australia and Europe too.

Pignorant interviews experts from various fields which can help people understand who these intelligent creatures are; how badly do we treat them; why is it so inhumane to use CO2 for killing animals or that working at slaughterhouses can have severe psychological effects on employees? Some of those interviewed include Dr Emma Allayne (Reader in Forensic Psychology), Philip Lymbery (CEO of Compassion in World Farming), Dr Donald Broom (Professor of Animal Welfare), Dr Alice Brough (veterinarian), Dr Jane Downes (member of the Animal Welfare Committee) and Juliet Gellatley (founder/director Viva! vegan organization).

In 2003 a government advisory body known as The Farm Animal Welfare Council stated that CO2 stunning/killing “is not acceptable and we wish to see it phased out in five years” However instead between 2017 – 2020 there was an 88% increase within its usage with regards towards killing pigs alone during this period?

The RSPCA-Assured scheme is also exposed during Pignorant where Juliet Gellatley talks about how she feels towards The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals saying “I think the RSPCA sold out years ago where farmed animals are concerned. They are not taking court prosecutions now for farmed animals. They pass it on to Trading Standards. The RSPCA do very little to protect farmed animals, which is staggering, really.”
