Picture a story about a Nigerian adopted in America who becomes successful in Nigeria’s legal industry but moves to Uganda instead. Here, he falls for an Acholi woman and has to travel through traditional rites and customs before marrying her.
That is Olushegun Achebe, or Shegun’s life as created by Kevin Johns Nabukenya in the film “My Love from Another Land.” The movie is premiered at Century Cinemax Acacia on Valentine’s Day 2024.
It is based on Pablo and Anu, a Nigerian American couple who relocated from the US to Uganda where they now work as farmers and share their life experiences on Familia Pablanu, their YouTube channel. Listen to their story of why they moved here.
The Ugandan cultural background poses several challenges as she gets closer with the Acholi love of his life. Being Nigerian means he adopts new behaviors that come with each discovery of cultural peculiarities within Uganda. But their love remains strong amid all these trials.
More than just love, “My Love from Another Land” also explores different cultures across the globe. It displays American humor turning into Nigerian culture and mainly focuses on Ugandan life together with marriage customs.
This movie is making history since it is not only the first ever Ugandan Nigerian American collaboration but also unique in its own way. It touches on various aspects close to people’s hearts such as; romance, comedy, parent child relationships, adoption, cultural clashes among others which deal with stereotypes too. Everyone can find something interesting from this film which assures non-stop entertainment throughout its duration. According to producers’ hopes expressed during production phase; this work shall forever remain memorable not only within local cinemas but become a Pan-African classic that will keep viewers glued to screens across Africa and beyond.
They were just casually capturing moments using their phones for social media when Anu and Pablo came up with this story idea. It has now transformed into a full length feature film shot by professionals and expected to hit theatres soon. These two Nigerian American lovebirds play main characters while also serving as executive producers, storywriters as well screenwriters so they are not entirely new in the industry. Having left high paying jobs behind back in America for farming purposes within Uganda, where they reside with four children.
Expect nothing less than tears of joy mixed with laughter during “My Love from Another Land” since it is both moving and culturally eye-opening.
